A private family-run tailgate, started in 1987, that fanatically supports Husker Football! In the early 2000s, the lot became what it is today. Go Big Red!!
The “Husketeers” tailgate was started in the late 1980s by a group of 5 family and friends from Hartington, Nebraska. They were University of Nebraska – Lincoln football season ticket holders that pooled their money together to find a tailgate location as close as they could to Memorial Stadium. They found an opportunity to rent a few spots in a parking lot behind an old paper staging and transpor
tation company, adjacent to the old Lincoln Journal Star. They started with a single grill and cooler, cooking enough to feed themselves. Through the 90s, they purchased their first tents and started grilling off a single propane grill for simple bites; burgers, dogs, and smokies to share with family and friends. By the end of the decade the tailgate was booming, and things were about to drastically change. As the 90s ended, the property was sold and portions of the paper staging building were demolished, opening an opportunity for expansion into more parking spaces, with only the eastern warehouse portion of the building remaining intact. This portion of the building was then purchased and occupied by the Lincoln Youth Sports Association, with the south end used as a “Game Room”. With the LYSA moving out of the building, which sat unoccupied for a few years, the Husketeers were offered one of two locations inside the building. And with that, the move into the building was made, where we still celebrate to this day! Today the Husketeers are composed of 10 friends/family and 3 sponsorship companies who help run, fund, and operate it. The tailgate is private with an average attendance of 500 people each gameday in Lincoln. In 2022, we celebrated our 35th year, and plan on many more to come.
