We started the day with an epic race! Record number of athletes at 241! Great group of volunteers and a cooler weather until ๐ŸŒฉโšก๏ธ.

First thanks for all the encouraging words and support for the race. You are the reason we do this! It was a call that needed to be made, I know how important it is to all of you, but we will never take any chances with your safety.

Grant, a Tiger Coaching and Personal Training client for almost seven years, performing a series of plyometric jumps.

Five things Grant does well during this exercise:

1. Hip & Knee Control - An anatomically sound position is maintained even while producing high force during a short duration. There is no deviation of his knees towards his mid-line (knee valgus). Hip stabilizers have been a very important part of Grant's workouts (gluteus medius/minimus).
2. Stable Body Position & Upright Chest - This contributes to a very repeatable and powerful jumping position. Confident body awareness allows an athlete to put more effort towards their timing and extending the hips, knees, and ankles with as much force as possible (triple extension).
3. Quick Landings - The quicker an athlete lands 'correctly' (aka sticks the landing) the faster they can change directions and jump back up the other direction. When the timing is just right an athlete can take advantage of the stored elastic energy within their muscles (stretch-shortening reflex).
4. Quiet Landings - Typically the quieter an athlete lands the better they are controlling the landing (safer landings).
5. High Knee Drive - Lower body plyometric exercises are implemented to increase speed and power in hip, knee, and ankle extension. Secondarily, an athlete can focus on driving their knees up towards their chest as fast as possible just after jumping (hip/thigh flexion). Athletes with sprinting speed goals, like Grant, benefit from this movement as it helps them increase the rate of leg turnover during running = more total strides per unit of time and increased forward speed.

This picture reminds us to press the elbows back (like you would when you saw) rather than raise your forearm up and down (like you would when you chop). Another cue as far as the chopping goes is donโ€™t milk the cowโ€ (same up and down motion rather than back and forward)
