Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series Opens in April

By Brian McLeod

EASTABOGA, Ala. — Winter is steadily fading in the rear-view mirror, and warmer weather has racers across the region anxiously awaiting the start of the 2022 Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series campaign.

Several changes have been made to the program for the upcoming season, which features four divisions that are sanctioned by the Adam Stewart-led organization: 604 Late Models, 602 Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks and Modified Sportsman.

Previously a 27-week season, this year’s version of the highly-anticipated Weekly Racing Series has been scaled back to a 25-week campaign that will begin the week of Monday, April 4, and extend through Sunday, Sept. 25. A driver’s top 14 finishes have counted toward the championship in past seasons, and this year it will be their top-13 finishes that will be counted.

“We made these changes to help ease the burdens of weekly racers who participate with us during what is a very long season for them,” Stewart said. “Coming off the two-year Covid-19 pandemic that interrupted supply chains worldwide, our drivers and tracks are still facing unprecedented price increases and shortages when acquiring the materials and equipment needed to maintain a race car for a full season of competition. We don’t want to burden their budgets or put additional strains on various supply chains. We felt it was appropriate to make these minor adjustments, because our weekly racers are the true backbone of our company. Our organization is only as strong as our drivers and tracks, and we need to look out for them as much as we can.”

Another change from previous years involves the $10 driver fee per event, which will no longer be collected from tracks by the organization. While that money was returned in full to sanctioned tracks at the end of each season, the organization will no longer be considered liable for the disbursement of a track’s point fund money. That responsibility will fall on the shoulders of the individual tracks, which have the option to continue charging the $10 per-week fee, but then face full responsibility for distributing the funds to its drivers at the end of the season.

“We’ve always used that as a way to help the tracks pay their points fund monies,” Stewart said. “The way we’ll do it now is to not collect those fees from the tracks on a weekly basis, and then there’ll be no need for us to distribute the money back at the end of the season. It’s going to reduce our paperwork and responsibilities, but we’ll continue to collect weekly sanctioning fees from our facilities, and have more time to work on other programs to benefit our racetracks. One that we plan to institute immediately is to give a financial break to tracks that sanction all four of our divisions. We will release those details in the near future, but it’s just another way to help our loyal, sanctioned facilities.”

It’ll be the 17th season of competition for the Alabama-based organization, which has experienced tremendous growth since Stewart assumed the company’s leadership role. Crate Racin’ USA recently moved its home offices into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame building in Lincoln, Ala., which is located across the street from Talladega Short Track. That third-mile oval, which is located in the shadows of 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway, was purchased last April by Stewart and David Miller, giving the steadily-expanding organization an official home track as an anchor facility for the company.

“We’ve been taking everything one step at a time, and our road is finally getting a little smoother after more than a year spent making decisions, and moving offices and equipment around,” Stewart said. “We moved the home offices from our previous location in Cartersville, Ga., to temporary offices at the racetrack, and now we’ve undertaken another move into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. We’re definitely proud to have our home offices in that building, which has hosted some of the biggest names in the motorsports industry.”

Stewart, who assumed the management of the company nearly three years ago, has ushered in a new era of unprecedented expansion since taking command in May, 2019. Previous owner [and founder] Mike Vaughn sold the company after engineering a successful run from its inception in 2005.

“It’s been a whirlwind period for all of us, but I believe we’re finally getting a more solid grip on the tremendous progress we’ve already made, and I’m always optimistic and positive about the future of this sport,” Stewart said. “We’ll be cautious in our approach as always, but we’re also looking forward to additional growth. A big part of the excitement stems from our popular Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series, and we’ll soon have updated announcements about new and returning tracks that have supported this organization for many years.”

Last year’s national champions in each of the four classes included Oakley Johns [604 Late Models], Morgen Lambert [602 Late Model Sportsman], Lee Ray [Street Stocks] and Rusty Duncan [Modified Sportsman]. The Thunder Bomber division, which was originally acquired when Crate Racin’ USA purchased the Southeastern Crate Association (SECA) in 2020, is no longer part of the organization. It was sold during the winter to Josh Hellams, who is currently operating it under the Mid-East Motorsports banner.

Brooks Tops CRUSA Street Stock Feature at Ice Bowl

By Brian McLeod

EASTABOGA, Ala. (Jan. 8th) — Starting from the pole after winning a heat race in the Crate Racin’ USA Street Stock portion of the 31st edition of the Ice Bowl turned out to be the best place to be, mostly because it kept Bo**er Brooks ahead of the oodles of incidents that produced 13 caution flags during the 30-lap affair.

Staying away from all the troubles, Brooks wheeled his Kenny Morgan-fielded entry to a $2,500 victory Saturday night at Talladega Short Track, emerging from a 45-car gathering that turned out to attempt to make the field at the track’s giant annual winter weekend.

The Chattanooga, Tenn., driver led the 24-car field during every circuit at the third-mile oval and crossed the stripe ahead of fastest qualifier Gary Tucker, Josh Hartman and Wyatt Hill, who suffered a flat tire earlier in the race and rebounded to finish fourth ahead of Jeremy Isbell.

Brooks had to survive numerous restarts that paused the event. Various spins and accidents, many of which affected the race’s top contenders, led to a mini-marathon that took 39 minutes and 53 seconds to complete.

Interruptions reigned, with multi-car incidents and various spins and accidents depleting the cast of frontrunners. Ten caution flags waved in the first dozen laps, and the longest stretch of green-flag racing was completed between laps 16-26 before a final caution slowed the pace with four laps remaining.

That one appeared when 18-year-old Tyler Worley, who was driving a car normally piloted by Race McMahan, slowed and rolled to a stop in turn two due to a broken gear while running third, which dropped him to a disappointing 18th-place finish.

Tucker, running second on the restart after falling back as deep as seventh place during the race’s earlier stages, had a final shot at unseating Brooks. He was unable to deal a significant challenge, and settled for runnerup honors.

Brooks drove a brand new car, and arrived at the third-mile facility without knowing exactly what to expect from the recently-completed machine. Complicating matters, some electrical issues during practice sessions that were held two days before the feature limited his practice time.

“We had some problems with the MSD box,” Brooks said. “We got that cleared up, and then went out and won a heat race to put us on the pole. The car was great, and during the feature we were just out there making laps and taking care of the tires. There were a lot of cautions, but none of them really affected us. Fortunately we were out front, and missed everything.”

Brook’s Morgan Motorsports-fielded machine carried sponsorship from B&L Construction, Twisted Performance & Machine, Extreme Concepts, Maid to Clean and Duggar’s Painting.
