The tournament was a huge success. Tournaments are a valuable part of martial arts training. They allow us to face our nerves, perform under pressure and walk away feeling proud - win or lose. These events help students stay focused, and push themselves beyond their comfort zone. These competitors will always remember this experience.
Thank you to everyone who competed, judged, or assisted with this great event. Great competition and great sportsmanship!

Our annual tournament is coming up fast.
Saturday, May 31st
We encourage all students to participate in this event. No regular classes on this day!
If you’re new to the idea of tournaments, think of this as "game day " for martial arts—just like soccer has matches or basketball has games, tournaments give students the chance to compete and apply what they’ve been learning in class in a supportive, exciting environment. Since this tournament is hosted by SMA, all of our instructors will be there to help the kids throughout the day and there will be many friendly faces of fellow students and families. It's the home field advantage.
We will have competition in forms, weapons forms, sparring and padded stick sparring at our tournament. The two main events students students should compete in are forms, and sparring. All divisions are split up by age and rank so that students compete against others that are the same or very similair belt rank and age. This keeps everything fair and safe.
For the forms competition students are giving a score between 1 and 10 from each judge based on power, balance, accuracy and overall presentation. The top score gets first place, and so on. For sparring, points are awarded for light contact with kicks or punches to the body, or to the helmet area. Matches are two minutes long and the person ahead in points at the end of the match is the winner, or once one competitor leads by 5 points they are declared the winner. In sparring we use a tournament bracket system so the winner goes on to another match until we have the winner for that division. Medals are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each age and rank group for each event.
We also have the opportunity for students in the weapons class to compete in weapons forms and all student are welcome to jump in on the padded stick sparring for a fun additional event.
Tournaments are a great way to build confidence, test skills, and celebrate their progress alongside their peers.
The tournament is open to all ranks and ages, and we strongly encourage participation—especially for those who have never done one before! It's time to use that courage and get out there!
👉 Event Date: Saturday, May 31st
