Today was our very first weaning day at Wilder Blue Ranch, and I’d say it was a success! 🤍🐴
What may look like something so simple—separating a few horses—actually took so much more thought, consideration, planning, and Faith than you might imagine.
There’s an old tradition in the ranching world that says it’s best to wean foals according to the Farmers’ Almanac. Some ranchers swear by it, and others may not. But as someone who’s still new to the breeding world, who am I to argue with a tale as old as time? 😂 For October, those dates were the 5th and the 28th.
Now, you may be wondering why we didn’t wean on the 5th. The honest answer? I was a nervous wreck!
Every worst-case scenario ran through my mind. I reevaluated our fencing, pasture footing, and weaning plan more times than I’d like to admit before finally deciding how we’d do it.
This little filly that I had spent months nurturing her mama through pregnancy for, dried off, helped stand, and watched nurse for the very first time was about to take her first big step toward becoming a big girl. And the thought of something happening to her because of something I might have overlooked absolutely terrified me.
But today, after a whole lot of praying, we walked out to those pastures with a comfort and confidence that hadn’t been there before. It was officially time.
We moved Fancy and Relic into the new weaning pasture, brought in her big sister Gerty for a little emotional support, and then walked Mama back to the mare pasture to reunite with her best friends.
And things went so much better than I could have imagined! Relic did a little bucking around and called out for her mama, but before long she settled in beside Gerty, and the two of them decided their round bale was far more interesting than all the commotion. 😂
For us, today was another first. Another milestone in a dream that once seemed so far out of reach.
And if there’s one thing today reminded me, it’s that sometimes you have to trust the work you’ve put in, give your worries to God, and have a little faith that everything will work out just as it’s meant to.
Our little Relic is growing up, and I couldn’t be prouder of the young horse she’s becoming. 💙
