Many of these runners have a long history running in the Lockport 10.
In 1968, the Lockport Track Club of New York put together a team of eight high school runners ages 14-18 to see how fast they could run 100 miles together. They ran on a 440-yard cinder track, each running 12.5 miles. They did it running sprints of continuous intervals of 220 yards and 110 yards, passing the baton.
Their time was 7:27:55, which is an average 4:28.2 pace per mile.
One runner remarked, "In the beginning it felt fairly easy to me, like I would be able do it all day. In the last few miles, I particularly remember struggling to start running again after each rest cycle. Blisters, sunburned skin, raw emotions, and quite a bit of pain accompanied us all on that 100-mile journey, but we reached our goal."
