"Barking up the wrong tree" might sound like something you would catch your dog doing, but it has a different meaning when used in conversations...

If someone is "barking up the wrong tree," it means they are making a mistake or a wrong assumption about what they are trying to achieve.

Some other words or phrases that have the same meaning are: misdirect one's efforts, misjudge, miscalculate, and mistake.

Letting the 'cat out of the bag' means to tell something that is a secret. Spilling the beans also means letting a secret out. Either way, you are not considered very trustworthy.

Expressions. Idioms. Phrases. Native English speakers love using them in conversation, and you’ll often find them popping up in books, TV shows, and movies too. To perfect your English, you really need to become confident in using idioms and knowing the difference between breaking a leg and pulling someone’s leg.

No time for a formal exercise routine? Find ways to incorporate a little extra movement into your daily routines at home or at the office.
