Columbine Classic 2026

We were able to power through this years Columbine Classic thanks to the support and help from my reining family.

Payton showed in her first derby with her horse Wicked Spook.
She showed amazing but had a couple penalties that kept her out of the money. We are so proud of how far she has come and can’t wait to see what’s next for her!

She redeem herself on Sunday placing 2nd in the Youth 13 and Under

Thanks to Alison Bendele for to opportunity to show this lovely 3 year old Prettywonder, aka Gal. This was her first trip through the pen and she’s proving to be pretty fun!

Huge shout out to my girls Rachel Phillips and Grace Simar for holding down the fort at home and at the show so we could be with my mom during a very difficult time.

Then there was the entire RMRHA Board who stepped up to relieve me of my show chair duties so I could be there for my mom. Patti Lee, Paul McKee, Kelsey Rhyne, Justin Rhyne, Medora Fralick, Tim Bauer, and I’m sure there are others who I’ve forgotten.

And of course, my fabulous husband for whom, at this point in my life I would not still be standing’s with out the love and support he has give. Me day after day for the past almost 15 years. Love him to the moon and back!

This has been such a challenging few months and last several years dealing with my dads illness, and at a time I felt no one would come to help or show support, my horse family stepped up and showed me what good people are really made of. I’m forever grateful and appreciative of your love and support!

👀 68 vs 72 — can you see the difference?

At first glance, both of these maneuvers might look pretty similar…

But in reining, the details are often what separate an average score from a much more competitive one.

Judges are watching for:
✔️ smoothness
✔️ cadence
✔️ degree of difficulty
✔️ control at speed
✔️ maneuver finish
✔️ overall correctness

One maneuver is lacking correctness,
while the other shows more precision, confidence, and quality throughout.

Watch closely and tell me:
➡️ Which maneuver would YOU score higher?
➡️ What differences stand out to you?

Learning to understand WHY scores happen is one of the fastest ways to improve your own runs and become more confident in the show pen.

👀 Here’s the breakdown from the last post!

The penalty in this small slow circle was:➡️ being out of lead.

A lot of riders miss this because the circle still looks fairly smooth overall — but judges are trained to watch for correctness first

💡 Hint from the last post:“Watch the front legs.”

In this clip, the horse changes leads with his front legs right before the stop.

Listen to my explanation on the reel as I explain how we ended up with a penalty and consequently a lowered maneuver score.

This is a great example of why understanding scoring matters so much in reining:Small mistakes can quietly lower a score even when the run still looks nice to the average spectator.

The more you learn to watch reining from the judge’s perspective, the easier it becomes to:✔️ improve your own runs✔️ recognize penalties faster✔️ understand score sheets✔️ make smarter corrections in training

What maneuver or penalty should I break down next? 👇

Whizhin and Hopin (that’s wishing and hoping not whizzen and Hoppin as the announcer keeps calling her) was so exhausted after her ranch riding and ranch on the rail she had to have her dinner while she laid down…..then she got a little scratchy scratchy
