UPDATE: August 26, 2024: This post (on August 23) was intended to be a quick update on the progress of the Smith County Courthouse construction project – one of many posts we have put out throughout the last several years. Since there are so many comments on this post from people who do not know the plans for this space, here is a quick update and explanation of what has been going on in Smith County. We have been posting updates throughout this entire process on our social media to keep the residents of Smith County informed. After years of planning and holding community meetings, the Smith County Courthouse and Parking Garage Bond passed with more than 53 percent of the vote in 2022. The county bought all the effected properties on Erwin, Spring and Ferguson Streets from their owners for the site of the future courthouse. Several of these buildings were long vacant and dilapidated. In October 2023, construction of the parking garage began. It is expected to be completed this fall. Earlier this month, demolition of the buildings began at the future site of the courthouse. Construction of the courthouse is expected to begin after the completion of the parking garage.
