This is a laser zone for the knees. I like to see the shoulders turn 90 degrees in the backswing, but not at the expense of an unstable lower body. When the knees get too active it can lead to excessive tilting of the pelvis and shoulders, making it hard to time the swing. Notice how Jack, Nelly and Tiger keep some flex in their trail knee. It can extend but I wouldn’t want to see it straight.

Back to work Heathrow and Legacy Country Clubs. I love the change this good player made. Depth at the top of the backswing makes it much easier to swing out to the ball in the downswing.

The two tee drill has cured a lot of slices in golf. Give this a try if you have a pull or a slice in your game.

Notice the tees are about one clubhead apart and at a 45 degree angle. This is an exaggerated drill, but you can clearly see this gentleman is not overdoing it. Sometimes we have to overdo feels to make a little change.

Straight line acceleration is what I’m chasing with this golfer. An object will move fastest when it’s in a straight line. I like to see the hands working towards the ball from the top of the backswing rather than dropping down or the old over the top move. This golfers arms and hands were dropping down rather than working in a straighter line towards the ball. The club was getting too behind his body making it challenging to create a predictable shot pattern with his irons. The alignment stick through the belt loops helped him to feel how his arms needed to work more outward because if they went down he would hit the stick.

We hear acceleration and braking a lot in the golf world lately, but it can be confusing. I believe we all have this natural kinematic sequence built into us. We all know how to shake something out of an empty bottle and we all know how to kill a mosquito that lands in our arm. These natural motions are similar to what happens in our golf swings.

Many golfers that I see don’t apply the brakes especially in the shoulder area during the downswing. Our shoulders and upper torso area feel strong, but it’s not how we deliver the final speed to the clubhead. The torso needs to slow down so that the arms can accelerate the club down near our hips and then the arms slow down so that the clubhead can whip through the ball thanks to the wrist action. Let’s get some snap at the bottom of your swing just like when you kill that mosquito.

Grab three dimes to see how your putting stroke is working.

1. Stacking the three dimes- thank you Kevin Weeks for teaching me this trick years ago. Ideally we want to catch the ball slightly on the upswing of our stroke to help create some topspin for the ball to roll well rather than hop. The typical rise angle for a good putter is typically between 2-3 degrees. Check that your ball position is a touch forward of center if you are struggling with this stack of dimes.

2. Dime placed in the cavity of putter. If you don’t have a cavity you can try placing it on top of your putter. - test it on a putt up to 15’ long. If the dime remains in the cavity then your stroke has a smooth transition as opposed to a jerky acceleration. If it comes out in the downswing then you likely have a slow backswing followed by a quick downswing. You will likely benefit from speeding up your backswing.

3. Dime placed one foot in front of ball - this can be done on any length putt. If the ball rolls left or right of the dime then you can conclude your face was open or closed at impact. Practice this a bit and you will likely figure out how to square up the face.

Reunited with Mike Bender at the Lake Placid Club this week for our golf school. This grip tip will help many of you! I’m sure you have heard it before but it’s worth a listen especially if you are guilty of gripping it in your palm.

This is a great bunker drill to improve your touch. Great job demonstrating .

Congratulations on finishing t-4th in the this week in New Mexico. Playing Club Golf in college is an excellent option for high school golfers to consider. What a great option especially if you want to attend a large university that has an outstanding collegiate team already like FSU.

Here’s a glimpse into a week of our College Prep program . I’m giving one student one of his three private lessons on clubface rotation Our program is powered by THRIVE. We have nine weekly 90-minute sessions covering full swing, short game, putting, on-course training along with three monthly zoom calls. This week in particular was focussed on wedge play. These kids are working hard chasing their dreams and I love guiding them.
