Jun Chong Martial Arts

Jun Chong Martial Arts, founded by Grandmaster Jun Chong, has been one of the longest standing martial arts academies in Southern California.

We are famous for a strong tradition and professional reputation since 1973. Our system is built on a consistent curriculum integrating various styles of martial arts, specifically Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. It has been successfully taught through the years to children and adults. Many of our students have become masters in their own right, attesting to the high quality and standards of our system.

We are extremely proud of Masters Phil and Kristine Blackman’s lifetime achievements and dedication to the martial arts. I especially appreciate their friendship and loyalty since 1987. May they have many more years of success in everything they do. Thanks for a great welcome and hospitality.

From left to right: Prof. Pedro Florindo and GM Jun Chong in Buenos Aires, Argentina, mid 1990's.
Prof. Florindo was a pioneer in the martial arts world of his native country Argentina and a great friend of GM Chong. He founded the Escuela Argentina de Taekwondo (EAT) in Buenos Aires. Florindo was the first Argentinian master traveling Los Angeles with a group of students to exchange ideas, training and for competition, not only under GM Chong, but other styles and masters as well. We remember Prof. Florindo with great respect and admiration, he passed away a few years ago leaving an unforgettable legacy. GM Chong has fond memories of his visits to Argentina and the wonderful hospitality he received.

Our bodies change as we age. This may be the end for many sports, but with martial arts one can adjust the pace and the training to adapt to an older body. If regular training is becoming too demanding, GM Chong recommends training in eskrima (kali or stick fighting), to continue stretching the limbs and the back, to keep kicking (maybe lower), and punching in the air. Just keep moving! In this picture we see Mr. Nobu Otake, at the age of 72, practicing a self defense technique. He received his black belt and fulfilled all the physical and mental requirements. In his essay he encourages seniors to engage in active exercises and to challenge themselves physically to maintain mobility and a clear mind. You go Mr. Nobu!

Great article about GM Chong’s sparring strategy. Just like a game of chess, thinking ahead will put you “ahead” of the game. Limiting yourself to one punch or one kick at a time is a recipe for mediocre performance.

Martial arts joke:
JIUJITSU: Involuntary yoga.

We've seen it over and over. Sometimes a naturally talented student, good kicks, good fighter, strong forms, once he/she gets the black belt, moves on. A struggling student, one who is not in a rush to get the belt, who has been humbled on the mat, may through discipline, attain excellence, get stronger and more formidable than the talented student who left.

Textbook flying side kick: kicking leg fully extended, blade of the foot out, other leg nicely tucked as you travel to your intended target. Nice demonstration by GM Chong, standing opposite is Master Nagayama.
