The Glendale and Los Angeles Electric Railway began operation in 1903. It connected Glendale to downtown Los Angeles, running through what is now Atwater Village on Glendale Boulevard.

In 1904, Pacific Electric Railway took over the rail line, and by 1925, The Pacific Electric (aka the Red Cars) would become the largest interurban electric railway in the world, spanning Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

About 3 years later, the Los Angeles Railway (aka the Yellow Cars) built out a streetcar line from DTLA to Eagle Rock. Rapid transit lines expanded through Northeast Los Angeles to downtown and the rest of the city, spurring the development of Cypress Park and Glassell Park as the streetcar suburbs of Los Angeles.
