Another Judo Legacy to know and be proud of in American Judo history. The Patteson Legacy.

Sensei Kenny Patteson was an elite senior competitor and member of the all star Tenri Dojo Judo Team in East Los Angeles through the late 1970's to 80's. Today he is one of the owners and head sensei of Eastside Dojo in Texas. Which is one of the best Judo programs in the country. Always placing in the top 3 dojos at the Senior National Championships. They most definitely have the largest facility! It's beautiful. Congratulations to the next generation of Patteson Sensei!

Be part of this story by competing in Sensei Patteson's annual Dallas Open Judo Championships held faithfully every November. It's the most action packed all ages tournament in the USA! The $1000 cash prizes for the Gold Medalist of each Senior Blackbelt divisions draws all the monsters to come out and play! So exciting!

Another great night of Judo at the Dojo! 20+ years ago, Rogerio Sampaio, a legendary Olympian from Brazil, visited our dojo, and I remember when he said in broken English..."A beautiful thing about Judo, is each us walk into the dojo tired, depressed or negativo, but after a good Judo practice, everyone leaves the dojo invigorated with love, joy and confidence to do anything we dream to do."

Great job to all of our judokas for the great energy last night.

Lots of questions about my last post, so here's the entire match. A Judo match can be very dynamic with lots of action standing and on the ground.

One of the greatest lessons from my recent trip to Lima, Peru, was to be sure to referee with love, passion and respect for Judo. All of that and more was wrapped up in this match. Love it.

Stuart Kam, 4dan
Head Sensei of SFV Judo

Stuart Kam started Judo under Seigoro Murakami in 1967 with his brothers, Stan and Steven. Stuart excelled in Judo as he developed a footstep (Deashi Barai) that quickly inverted most of his opponents. Stuart was very successful in local and national competitions winning many trophies during his competitive career. He was also the Team Captain on many of the dojo teams that won many team trophies.

As a teenager, Stuart also trained at the historic Seinan Dojo under Kuniyuki sensei. Seinan Judo Dojo dominated American Judo in the 1950's and 1960’s winning many team trophies. Seinan was home to many super star judoka like Roy Sugimoto, Henry Iriye and Ronnie Kaichi. Stuart was very fortunate to get to learn and experience Judo at such a prestigious program at the time.

In the early 1970’s, through the connections of Murakami and Kuniyuki senseis, Stuart was able to travel abroad to Japan. He trained at many dojos in Japan and entered many tournaments. He won many very unique trophies in Japan. One of them is a mini samurai helmet.

In 1977, Stuart was awarded his Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt), and continued competing locally while establishing his career in the grocery industry.

In 1989 after the dojo’s loss of young blackbelt, Paco Iniguez, Stuart stepped up for the dojo to assist Roy Murakami sensei at the dojo. At this time, San Fernando Judo had a very strong junior program with 17 junior national champions training daily. Stuart was a perfect fit with his powerful footsweeps, tai otoshi, uchimata and tani otoshi, he was able to be a great example for the juniors to follow.

Stuart Kam was always very physically fit. Always very strong and always in shape, which allowed Stuart to continue competing at the local, state and national levels all the way into his late 50’s. Stuart has not retired from competition yet, but on top of all of his junior trophies, he has collected the following hardware to add to his collection:

Gold Medal, 2013 Winter National Championships
Gold Medal, 2014 U.S. Masters National Championships
Gold Medal, 2014 Winter National Championships
Gold Medal, 2016 U.S. Masters National Championships

In 2017, Stuart Kam honorably accepted the responsibility of being the Head Sensei of San Fernando Valley Judo Club. The first non-Murakami to continue on the Seigoro Murakami Legacy that was started in 1921.

In the mean time, Stuart is building his own legacy with his nephew, Mike Toren, and grand niece, Lily and grand nephew, Ben, are all doing judo at San Fernando. Mike is a 1st Degree Black Belt and does a fantastic job assisting Stuart with the Advanced Class.

Kumi Kata (Grip Fighting) is one of the most important elements of modern Judo, establishing a good grip and negating your opponents grip can be what wins or loses you a match.

:::

Grip fighting doesn't make many highlight reels, but it's definitely an aspect of Judo that needs to be tended to and respected as a higher level competitor.

Here's a recent match from 2019 that is a very good example of good, effective grip fighting. You may not like it, but if you had to compete against it, it would be very tough to deal with.

Nemanja MAJDOV / IJF.org The official International Judo Federation website - IJF - is the judo hub for all the judo community members as well as those exploring the sport of judo. Thank you, Ray Fukumoto and Christine Onouye for sharing this with us.

The Kewen dojo was used post internment camp from 1945 to 1955.

This is great photo of our dojo and the founder, Mr. Seigoro Murakami.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Morote Seoinage = Two arm Shoulder Throw

At San Fernando Dojo, we consider Morote Seoinage the first step to building a strong judo foundation. Many San Fernando Judoka were very good at executing this throw. Especially our previous head sensei, Mr. Michael Murakami. He had a beautiful morote seoinage that he won hundreds of trophies with.

Mr. Hatsuyuki Hamada of Japan, does a great job explaining everything you need to know about Morote Seoinage in this video...
