Sleep stealer #3 Ill-timed sleep schedules ⁣

When children go to sleep past their sleep times, their cortisol levels rise, which causes them to have a more challenging time achieving sleep. Children are therefore more likely to wake up during the night and early morning as their brain is still in a stressed sleep state from going to sleep that way. ⁣

Following your child’s age-appropriate wake windows is one of the key components to getting them to sleep successfully. ⁣

Check out the highlight Wake Times on my storylines to see what your baby's awake times are.⁣

A common question I get asked is, “How many hours should my baby be sleeping?” ⁣
(When can I get a break from my baby is the underlined question 😜)⁣

Answer: depending on what our bodies are going through at that time will dictate how much sleep we need. In general, adults sleep for 7-8 hours. Children 9-12 hours, but ever notice that teens, babies, and sick people want to sleep A LOT?!!? ⁣

This is because our bodies and minds are growing exponentially, or healing leaving us with an increased need for sleep. ⁣

A baby can only sleep x amount of hours in a 24 hour period. So, how many hours should your baby sleep so that they don't become sleep deprived? ⁣

0-2 months 14-18 hrs ⁣
3-4 months 14-16 hrs ⁣
5-11 months 14-15 hrs ⁣
12-18 months 13-14 hrs ⁣
19-36 months 12-13 hrs ⁣

Often when a child sleeps more than children his age, it can be a sign of a medical condition.⁣

For example, when you have a cold, your breathing quality weakens since you can’t breathe well. This can be a direct culprit of inadequate sleep during the night, which causes you to be more sleepy during the day. Your body, therefore, compensates by giving increased rest during the day. Once your body heals, your sleep performance rises again, and then you get back to your good ol self. Some children experience the same type of disrupted sleep every night due to allergies, snoring, or other sleep conditions.⁣

Approach #3 - The Do-Nothing Approach.⁣

Just go about your day like you usually would and let your baby naturally adjust to the new time. ⁣

Tips:⁣

☀️ Expose your baby to lots of sunlight during the day; the sun is responsible for regulating your Circadian Rhythm and melatonin output. The more direct sun exposure you expose your child to, especially early in the day, the faster your child will adjust to the new time change. ⁣

☀️ On the day of DLS, if your child is ready to go to sleep before the new scheduled bedtime, let them do so. Your baby will most likely sleep better if you catch them before they become overtired. ⁣

☀️ Be consistent and patient! ⁣

Day Light Savings Approach #2 - The Last Minute Approach ⁣

Shift your whole schedule forward by 30 minutes on Day 1 and another 30 minutes on Day 2, and bam, you are all set for the new time change!⁣

Tips:⁣

☀️Stick to a consistent bedtime routine during this process; this will prepare your child for sleep no matter what the clock says. ⁣

☀️ Try to get your child to nap well during this transition as it can help relieve some of the discomfort related to the time change. ⁣

Come back on Thursday for approach #3 and some more tips to get you through the time change. ⁣

Many parents get frazzled when Day Light Savings starts approaching as on Sun Nov 1st, the clocks will tick back by an hour.⁣

This time change can be frustrating when it comes to our children’s schedules as their internal clocks aren't coinciding with this time change. Which means for most parents with children, no extra hour of sleep 😔 ⁣

But worry not mommas, here are 3 approaches to help adjust your child to the time change:⁣

Approach #1 - The Gradual Shift Approach ⁣

Adjust to the new time slowly before DST. ⁣
Over the next few days before DST, you can start shifting your baby's BT, naps, and mealtimes later by 10 minutes each day. At the end of the week, your baby will be on schedule with the new time, ready for the clock to change.⁣

Example wake times for the week: ⁣

Tuesday 7:10 am⁣
Wednesday 7:20⁣
Thursday 7:30⁣
Friday 7:40⁣
Saturday 7:50⁣
Sunday 7:00 am (new time) ⁣

You can use this slow approach after DST too, just slowly adjust your child to their new schedule. ⁣

Check back in tomorrow for approach # 2

Pro tip: Follow your baby’s age-appropriate wake time (the amount of time your baby can be up in between sleep times) and have him/her in their crib 20 minutes before their wake time ends to prevent your baby from becoming overtired. ⁣

Putting an overtired baby down for a nap will not go smoothly. Catching your baby before they get overtired is essential for successful rest. ⁣

4-6 Months - 1.5-2.5 hrs⁣⁣

How soon can you introduce your newborn to a bedtime routine? ⁣

The way to know when your baby can take to a routine is when this sweet development occurs:⁣

SOCIAL SMILING! ⁣

At about 6-8 weeks from your baby's due date is when a baby starts smiling back at you. (Some can reach this milestone by four weeks if a baby is born later)⁣

When she reaches is this milestone, she can reciprocate, smiling back at you and return the excitement in seeing you. ⁣

During this development, certain parts of the brain are evolving. Your baby's now capable of seeing short distances, making sense of objects, and responding to your smile. Unfortunately, this is also a development that is associated with heightened crying and fussiness as a result of your infant becoming more conscious of her atmosphere.⁣

At this age, you will start noticing a response from your baby to a routine, stemming from their developing ability to predict what happens next in daily occurrences such as wake - feed - social and sleep time situations.⁣

The first time your baby smiles at you is like nothing else in the world. All those sleepless nights, morning sickness, and waddling around during pregnancy make it all worth it! ⁣

Just remember that this too shall pass and that I am here to help you through these next tough few months!⁣

*Encourage a smile by bringing your babe close to your face, make silly sounds, sing, talk, and smile after feeding or nap.⁣

When did your baby start smiling? ⁣

Tip 6 on how to soothe the effects of separation anxiety. ⁣

Match your words with your actions. ⁣

You can create a phrase like “Mommy always comes back” and keep repeating it to your child throughout the day. When you come back home after not seeing him/her for a bit, repeat this phrase. ⁣

Doing this will help your child associate your words with your actions and will create a sense of security in knowing that you always come back and can help him/her feel more secure at sleep times.⁣

SEPARATION ▪️ ANXIETY 5/6 ⁣

Tip 5 on how to soothe the effects of separation anxiety.⁣

Don't prolong goodbyes.⁣

Make sure to keep your goodbye to a minimum, be positive, use reassuring phrase and project confidence. ⁣

Stay calm and confident even if your baby is crying and clingy, they feel your energy and mirror your vibes.⁣

Your baby trusts you, if you give off a vibe that makes her sense that departing from you is negative, it can make this experience much harder for her to deal with.⁣

SEPARATION ▪️ ANXIETY 4/6 ⁣

Tip 4 on how to soothe the effects of separation anxiety ⁣

Play peek-a-boo.⁣

Playing this game with your little ones can help them get a better understanding of object permanence. ⁣

Go behind a chair and pop out! Doing this can help your baby face separation in small doses and help her feel more able to separate from you at sleep times. ⁣

Make this an enjoyable experience! ⁣
