There’s a reason Sir Alex Ferguson used to switch to that fluid 4-4-2 when teams sat deep, and I think Michael Carrick should bring it back at United.

We saw against Hull how difficult we can look when a team stays compact and takes away the space our attackers want to use.

Ferguson understood that sometimes you have to change the way you attack these teams, and his fluid 4-4-2 gave United two forwards to occupy the centre-backs while the wide players could move inside and create more problems.

That movement made it harder for defenders to simply stay in their positions and wait for United to cross the ball into a crowded box.

Carrick has the players to try something similar, especially with Šeško, Cunha, Rashford, Mbeumo and Bruno all capable of moving around the front line.

I'm not saying Carrick should abandon his system, but against teams that sit deep, maybe it's time to bring back one of Sir Alex's old tricks. ❤️

Manchester United has been offered the opportunity to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as his representatives explore a potential late move before the transfer window closes.

According to Graeme Bailey, Mateta’s agents are pushing for a transfer, with Manchester United and Tottenham among the clubs offered the chance to bring in the French forward.

However, Crystal Palace are understood to have no interest in allowing Mateta to leave, meaning any potential deal would face a major obstacle from the Premier League club.

🚨🔴 Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has admitted his side face tactical problems against teams that line up with a back five, following the disappointing defeat to Hull City.

Asked whether his system could struggle against opponents using a back-five formation, Carrick acknowledged that United still need to find solutions when facing different tactical setups.

“So yeah, there's definitely issues playing against different systems, you know. So we've got to find the answers for that,” Carrick said.

The admission comes after Hull successfully frustrated United, who struggled to create clear chances despite dominating possession for large periods of the game.

However, Carrick was keen to stress that the defeat does not mean his entire tactical approach is wrong, pointing to United's strong record over the previous six or seven months.

“We haven't lost many games in six, seven months. So again, I get it, we've lost today, and I understand there are questions to be asked, but it doesn't mean everything's wrong because we've lost a game.”

Carrick believes United did plenty of things well but accepts that the team must improve when opponents adopt different defensive structures.

“We've done a lot of good things and we did some good things today, but it gets lost.”
