Fun fact

In honor of , let us salute Thora Lund Robinson not only onboard but at the helm of one of the two boats to finish the first Bermuda Race in 1906, GAUNTLET. She clearly threw down the gauntlet and paved the way for many other female sailors 117 years later!

The Race at the time was thought impossible and very dangerous. Thora was 20 and newly married to George Robinson, the owner of the smallest boat. She stated that she was not about to permit her husband to risk his life alone. While the organizers were "horrified" the founder, Thomas Day, knew that if had no chance of convincing anyone to do the Race if he banned her.

Upon her successful completion, Day stated "now that a lady has made the voyage there is no excuse for not going." So both males and females owe a lot to Mrs. Robinson! Over 5,500 and over 60,000 sailors have now taken on the coveted ocean adventure.

How to Get More Women Into Competitive Sailing 03/10/2022

Getting young girls involved in racing is one way. Keeping them involved is another. Getting grown women to love racing and sailing is another level! I'm in for all of it.

One of the many benefits of being a member at LAYC is the option for members to bareboat charter any vessel in our sailing fleet. Chartering is a great option for those who don’t have a boat, or for anyone who would like a fun harbor tour with the advantage of quick and easy rigging and derigging of a smaller boat. Take guests out, go whale-watching, and practice your small keelboat handling without having to visit the gas dock or detail your boat! You can take the written test at any time the office is open.
