James Anderson – A cricketer for whom age is just a number 08/30/2020

Here’s a glimpse on the illustrious career of James Anderson. Unlike his swing-bowling that turns in both directions, his cricketing career has headed only one way - upwards. A career that boasts 600 Test wickets at 38, with lots more to come!

The downfall of a legend-to-be 08/09/2020

Millions of people across the world play cricket. A fortunate few make it to the national team, and only a selected few go on to become legends of the game. There are some who are talented enough to become the legends of the game but are marred by either uncontrollable circumstances or due to the lack of their own maturity.

In today’s 4 minute blog, I have written about the downfall of that one cricketer, who, if viewed unbiasedly, we all thought would be a cricket great but is nowhere close to it. Know who it is? Check it out at:

The changing colour (of a cricket ball) 08/03/2020

Cricket is played with three different coloured balls, namely - the red, white and the pink. Ever wondered why was there a need for three different colours? Also, why just these three colours and not any other?

In a 3 min read, I have expressed my reasoning behind it. Check it out at:

Ganguly didn’t swap players after few failures, Virat does. Why so? Who is correct? 06/21/2020

We watch cricket right! We know who Sourav Ganguly is and who Virat Kohli is. We know them as exceptional players. But are they both exceptional captains? Ganguly yes, but Virat, I leave it for you to decide.

One thing though is quite contrasting in their captaincy - Ganguly backed all his players even after failures, but that’s not the case with VK. Why is that so? Who is correct?

Well, in a 3 min read, I have analysed the reason behind it. Check it out at:

The match that changed Sehwag’s career 06/03/2020

We all know Virender Sehwag (who doesn’t right?)! We know how devastating as a batsman he was. But that’s not how he started his cricketing career. He was more a filler in the team, without much impact. So how did he manage to instil fear in the bowlers? What led him to succeed as one of the best opening batsmen of all times?

In a 3 min read, I have detailed the match that changed Sehwag’s career. Check it out at:

Do you know Sir Jadeja? No, it isn’t Ravindra Jadeja. There was one other player, much prior to Ravindra Jadeja, who was the real “Sir Jadeja” - Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji Jadeja!⁣

Regarded as the player who popularised leg glance, the ruler of the princely state of Nawanagar represented Sussex, London, and Cambridge University in a total of 307 First-Class matches. ⁣

He had an unorthodox batting technique and was famous for revolutionizing the way the game was played. While most players in those days played on the front-foot, Ranjitsinhji predominantly played on the back-foot, both in defense and attack, introducing the cut shot into cricket. ⁣

In the 15 Test matches he played for England, he scored 989 runs at an average of 44.95 with 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries. His top score of 175 was one of his finest innings. ⁣

It is uncommon for a cricketer to leave the crease, in an attempt to hit a shot, in Test Cricket; more uncommon for a bowler to do it. ⁣

However, besides holding the record of taking all 10 wickets in an innings in a Test, Jumbo holds the record of being stumped the most number of times by an Indian. He has been stumped 6 times in his career spanning about 18 years!⁣

It is surprising to know this because when we talk about stumping, the obvious player that pops up in our mind is Virender Sehwag, but that’s not the case to be.⁣

A batting strike rate of just 20.68 in an ODI of any era is below par; definitely mediocre when you are chasing a humongous target of 335! But such was the case with the batting veteran, Sunil Gavaskar, in that match. ⁣

It was the 1st match of the Prudential World Cup in 1975 at Lords and India was up against England. The hosts smashed 334 runs in 60 overs. Their centurion, DL Amiss, scored at a strike rate of 93.19.⁣

Chasing a mountain-like total of 335 with a Required Run Rate of 5.58 was a massive task those days and India needed an attacking and a positive opening partnership. Unfortunately, both Indian openers had a very cautious start batting with a strike of around 20. That did not help the cause of the team. In fact, after the match, the team management showed discontent with Gavaskar’s approach towards the chase. ⁣

The batting maestro holds many records that are worth remembering but for this one. He has been a legend of the game and surely an inspiration to a lot of players around the world and it has been a privilege to have him play for India. ⁣

Bowling 131 balls without conceding a single run - you can’t do that unless you are Bapu Nadkarni! That was the specialty of this man. Bowling an unerring line and length and preventing the batsmen from scoring runs was his forte. ⁣

It has been rumored that he would place a coin on the pitch and aim to hit it each time he bowled in the nets. No wonder he had such control over his bowling!⁣

This master-spell of bowling, which he bowled against England at Madras (now Chennai) in 1963-64 test series, has since been a world record; a record that looks unlikely to be broken, especially with the hit-and-miss attitude of batsmen these days. ⁣

He was a mediocre batsman and managed to score the lone century (122*) of his career in the same Test series. ⁣
