“I want to be remembered as a woman... who dared to be a catalyst of change.”

Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman to be elected to Congress and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for President of the United States from one of the two main political parties.

She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and would go on to graduate from Brooklyn Girls’ High (1942) and Brooklyn College (1946). Her professors encouraged her to consider a political career but she said she faced a “double handicap” being black and female.

After graduating Chisholm would go on to work as a nursery school teacher, marry, and graduate from Columbia University with a degree in early childhood education. By 1960, her political career was beginning to take shape. She served as a consultant to NYC Division of Day Care, joined local chapters of the League of Women Voters, the NAACP, the Urban League, and the Democratic Party Club. She had seen first hand the discrimination people of color and women faced and wanted to make a change.

In 1964 Chisholm became the second African American in the New York State Legislature. And, in 1968, she won her seat in Congress. During her tenure, she introduced over 50 pieces of legislation and championed racial and gender equality, the plight of the poor, and the ending of the Vietnam war.

Her quest for the Democratic presidential nomination was consumed by discrimination. Despite not being allowed to join televised debates because of her skin color, and being ostracized by the predominantly male Black Caucus, Chisholm was able to get 10% of the primary votes. She did not win the nomination, but she gained the support of students, women and minorities who all followed the “Chisholm Trail.” Chisholm retired from Congress in 1983 as a pioneer of minority and women’s rights.

January 28, 2020, one year ago, FIT4MOM Los Angeles Grand Re-Opening! It was a morning of connection, excitement and #strengthinmotherhood

As we reflect on the past year, it certainly didn’t go as planned and there were many pivots, some low-points, and some really great high-points including launching Body Well, Run Club and New class formats!

On our recent ALL Company call, they shared that the word of the year is THRIVE. To thrive is to progress towards a goal despite circumstance. This couldn’t be more appropriate as we head into Year 2 and we plan to do just that.

We will keep showing up for you. We will keep offering classes that push and inspire you. We will keep supporting you. We will THRIVE!

Thank you to each and every one of you who has supported FIT4MOM Los Angeles this past year! You make this village so special!

Today we celebrate a landmark moment in American history as Kamala Harris, former California Senator, is sworn in to become the first Black and South Asian + WOMAN American Vice President. She was previously the second Black woman ever elected to the United States Senate. “With one oath, she will also become the highest-ranking woman in U.S. political history,” says Business Insider.

She will be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina justice on the Supreme Court. While both these women are the first, they are not the last.

“Representation is powerful. Women, and especially women of color, have waited generations to finally see themselves at the highest level of government. Not only is Harris the first such woman to ascend to the second-highest office in our country — she is also the daughter of immigrants. Her story reflects the experience of millions of Americans. Little girls will finally be able to see themselves fully reflected in their government” (USA Today, 2021).

As Kamala Harris said in her Vice President-elect victory speech, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities….To the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they’ve never seen it before. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way.”

Today, young girls around the world will see there is nothing they can’t do and kids everywhere will be inspired to dream big. We are proud to see a woman make history today and shatter a glass ceiling for all womankind. Here’s to Kamala Harris, to the women who came before her, and the ones we’re raising who will grow to be future leaders.

Whether you're a stay-at-home mom or working mom, setting a nighttime routine can help you unwind, get organized for the next day, and therefore, feel less stress or anxiety, and save you time in the morning.

When creating a PM routine, you want to keep it short and sweet so it's not overwhelming, daunting, and unachievable. Create tasks within your nighttime routine that last no longer than one hour (Fab Working Mom Life, 2020). Here are some ideas from Fab Working Mom Life to create a nighttime routine that works for you and your schedule; they recommend doing these at the *same time* *every day* so a routine becomes a habit.

- After-dinner clean-up
- Pack lunches or meal prep for the next day
- Bedtime routine for the kids
- Mom self-care time: read a book, take a bath, cozy up on the couch with a warm up of tea, etc.
- Planning tasks for the next day/reviewing calendar
- Laying out clothes for the next day
- Putting everything that needs to go out tomorrow by the door or in your bag (or in your car)
- Plan for your day ahead

Check-in with us on social using the #strengthinmotherhood + #F4Mnewyeardoyou hashtags and tag @fit4momlosangeles + @FIT4MOMHQ with a selfie or picture of you completing today's #newyeardoyou challenge. What is your dream PM routine that's realistic for your life and your schedule?

Hint: Tomorrow is the last day of our challenge, and we'll be focusing on nutrition/eating healthy"

It's day THREE of our New Year Do You Challenge, and today we're challenging you to create a morning routine for yourself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Creating a routine for yourself as a mama is just as important as creating a routine for your little(s). Here are some benefits of creating a consistent AM routine (via Northwestern Medicine):⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- LOWERS STRESS⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Looking for some inspo on what to incorporate into your morning routine? Here are some examples via SELF & our community (create one that works for you and keep it simple; a consistent routine is designed to help you, not add more stress):⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🛏 Make your bed every morning⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👚 Follow a consistent "getting ready" order⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📱 Delay looking at your phone; don't grab for it right when you wake up!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⏰ Purchase an alarm clock so you don't need to grab your phone first thing in the AM⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💧 Drink a glass of water or lemon water⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙏 Say 3 things you're grateful for, out loud⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧽 Wash your face/take a shower⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🎶 Listen to fun music that puts you in a happy mood⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧘‍♀️ Meditate or take some quiet "me time" before getting out of bed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✏️ Write out your daily tasks to stay organized & reduce stress⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Check-in with us on social using #strengthinmotherhood + #F4Mnewyeardoyou hashtags and tag @fit4momlosangeles w/ a selfie or pic of you completing today's challenge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(Psst: Now that you've created your AM routine, tomorrow we'll focus on PM.)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Love this post from @irunfortheglory ❤️
There is a a lot of hard stuff coming at us and we CAN do hard women, as mothers, as humans.

Today, I compartmentalized.
The world is still on fire,
Fear and division still run deep,
but…endlessly watching news videos and scrolling social media wasn’t going to change any of that.

I needed to breathe.

Since Wednesday, I haven’t been able to stop checking my phone,
to focus enough to form coherent thoughts and sentences,
to find my bearings for a moment to even cry the tears that seem to be damming up behind my lips.

I fell asleep last night still clutching my phone.

But today, this morning, I compartmentalized:
Speed intervals.
And of course, the usual, self-sabotaging fears.

I can’t do this.
*I CAN do this.*

There are 12 of them.
*I CAN do this.*

I can’t focus.
*I CAN do this.*

It’s so cold.

6:19, 7:23, 7:06, 6:52, 6:59, 7:09
7:16, 7:26, 7:07, 7:04, 6:55, 6:52

The world is still on fire,
and humanity is still so painfully broken.
but today, this morning,
I showed up courageously for myself
outside in the cold
in spite of the heartache
in spite of the weariness
in spite of the fears
and I b r e a t h e d.
