Watts House Project (WHP) is an artists driven neighborhood redevelopment organization.

The Watts House Project (WHP) is inspired by the iconic Watts Towers built by Simon Rodia and the history of the neighborhood in which they exist. WHP understands that art and architecture can play a fundamental role in community and economic development in the immediate Watts Towers community, and seeks to enact the shared visions of neighborhood families by:

+ focusing on the renovation of exis

Sierra Service Project keeps delivering!!! Our partnership with SSP has been so fruitful, so productive, we can't imagine where we would be without their help. Not sure where they find these amazing people but every single volunteer has been a God send. Although they

USC designs for a temporary workshop 03/15/2014

Professor Victor Jones is directing this new collaboration with Watts House Project. A few years ago, the good professor, along with some amazing architecture students, designed and fabricated the current front fence at the Platform. This time, Victor directed his brilliant students to consider a new temporary workshop for our current and future artists in residence. Today, students had their review and critique, and the professor's students did an amazing job of working through some of the challenges of the site - the weather, the amount of limited space, the audience, and low cost materials.

Never a dull moment at Watts House Project! Genaro Alvarez, our artist in residence, was hired by a resident to weld a few broken parts on this mechanical bull. Can't wait to see Genaro test it out!

Kicking off the official start of the ArtPlace summit in Los Angeles!! Last year it was in Miami and Trinidad, our programs director, soaked up the sun and ideas and creative place making in South Beach. This year it's in our back yard. It'll be great to see familiar faces we met last year.

We want to start sharing info about our neighbors in Watts. This is our first going at the endeavor so we thought we'd share our favorite cafe spot in all of Los Angeles. The Watts Coffee House is a little island of deliciousness in a sea of business is South L.A. And like a remote island, it's hard to find. Located at 1827 E. 103rd Street (inside of a high school called Youth Opportunities...NOTE: GOOGLE MAPS SHOWS IT ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE STREET) the Watts Coffee House is run by Desiree Edwards - a friendly, sweet lady ready to talk your ear off if you want to listen. As you can see from the pictures, it's part coffee shop, diner, and museum. Wattstax plays on a loop on one TV and on different monitor you can relive some of the greatest boxing bouts in history - Sugar Ray Leonard, Mohamed Ali, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, etc. The menu is soups, sandwiches, steaks, burgers and salads but there's a home southern style flare to it. Collard greens are on request with your burger or sandwich, sweet potato pie, homemade biscuits with the cinnamon apples on top...I could go on. Definitely stop by and have a bite! NOTE: it closes early...around 3pm.
