A surprise visit from Sensei Paul Kurose from Seattle. The Kurose brothers Guy, Rollie, and Paul trained in Goju-Ryu Karate with emphasis on physicality based upon timing, footwork, and efficiency.

Ishii sensei and Chicago Dojo instructor Erik Matsunaga traveled to Okinawa to to train in Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu and attend a celebration od the Shoshin Nagamine memorial monument, sponsored by the World Matsubayashi-ryu (Shorin-ryu) Karetdo Association.

Oddly, one of the highlights during a break at the Okinawa Karate Kaikan was running into legendary Shotokan master Yoshizo Machida from Brazil, who was in Okinawa for the Japan Karate Association's Gichin Festival commemorating 100 years since the introduction of karate from Okinawa to mainland Japan.

Ishii sensei had previously met Machida sensei's sons, Chinzo & Lyoto, through their support of Nikkei Games in Los Angeles, where Chinzo runs a dojo in Lomita. Despite being on his way to one of his own sessions in another area of the kaikan, Machida sensei was a complete gentleman and put all his things aside to chat with Ishii sensei and take a photo with them in the birthplace of karate.

It was our pleasure and honor to welcome Paul Kurose to our dojo last night for an evening of old school Karate. Paul is the younger brother of my Sensei and friend Guy Kurose (rip). Paul's jiyu kumite is as vibrant and dynamic as ever and reminiscent of our days on the floor with his brothers Guy and Rollie back in the day. Ended the evening at Koraku talking story over a tasty late night meal.
