Keiro no Hi is a celebration meaning Respect for the Elders Day. The Keiro organization of Los Angeles was founded in 1961, and the 60 year anniversary theme is “Oiwai,” or “Celebration.” Community members aged 60+ were invited to “create and express their talent through different forms of art.”

As part of the celebration, Ishii sensei was invited to speak about karate as a Japanese American cultural art, assisted by François Chau.

Additionally showcased through the following YouTube link are representatives of the Ikenobo school of ikebana (flower arranging); Ito En tea company; the Doizaki Family/Kawaguchi-Kihara Memorial Foundation for fine arts; the Sustainable Little Tokyo calligraphy program; the Toshizo Watanabe Culinary Cultural Center; the Venice Japanese Community Center Senior Wellness Program; Asian Persuasion musical group; and Little Tokyo’s Japanese American Cultural and Community Center campus.

Go Sakura!!

08/02/2021

Join us to cheer Sakura on in Tokyo!

The public is invited to the Terasaki Budokan on Wednesday, Aug. 4, to cheer on Sakura Kokumai, the first U.S. karate Olympian, as she competes in the Tokyo Olympics!

A native of Honolulu and a resident of Stevenson Ranch, Kokumai, 28, will compete in female elite kata. She has won multiple medals as a member of the USA Karate National Team since 2007. In kata, athletes perform a series of predetermined movements, more akin to a gymnastics floor exercise than a traditional combat bout. Only 10 women and 10 men qualify for Tokyo in the kata competition.

The event will be held outdoors from 6 to 10 p.m. when Olympic karate is scheduled to be televised. Kokumai will give a message via video and there will be a karate demonstration by Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu Dojo of Little Tokyo. The celebration is sponsored by Panasonic and Terasaki Budokan.

The Matsubayashi Ryu Karate Do of Little Tokyo is angered by the actions taking place against the AAPI community. We have watched our brothers and sisters being attacked both physically and verbally and we are here to take a stand.
A couple days ago, our friend Sakura Kokumai was verbally threatened and harassed while training in a park. Sakura Kokumai is an American. She will be representing America in the 2021 Olympics.
No one should be treated the way that she was. We stand with Sakura and the entire AAPI community.

Japanese American National Museum

Chicago has been home to Japanese Americans for many decades. Pre-WWII, there were about 400 Japanese people living in Chicago. That number increased significantly after Executive Order 9066 was signed and Chicago became one of the rare cities to welcome Japanese Americans who were returning from incarceration or war. During those years between 1942-1945, over 20,000 Japanese Americans resettled in various neighborhoods of Chicago. Nikkei communities sprouted in the post-war years.

Writer Erik Matsunaga was born in Chicago, a descendant of WWII-era Nikkei resettlers from California. He writes about the importance of these ethnic enclaves, documenting the many Japanese-owned businesses in the historic region of Clark and Division. He also recalls memories of living in the Windy City, everything ranging from "going to Yahiro's grocery for popsicles" to "the man with a monkey walking along the street."

You can read his work on Discover Nikkei (http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/journal/author/matsunaga-erik/?page=1), then join us TOMORROW at 5pm PT for Discover Nikkei’s Nima Voices: Episode 2—Erik Matsunaga. Matsunaga will be joined by fellow writer Naomi Hirahara in a brief yet enlightening conversation. The program will be FREE on Discover Nikkei's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4_b_PzE_fY
