Why Most Guard Passing Fails (It’s NOT About Getting Past The Legs)

Excerpts from one of our YouTube posts. Link in bio!

One of the biggest misconceptions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the way practitioners think about guard passing.

Because of sport scoring, most people approach passing with one objective: get around the legs and score the pass. But passing the legs was never the real objective—it was simply the first step toward controlling, immobilizing, and ultimately submitting your opponent.

This mindset creates a major problem. Many practitioners successfully get past the legs, yet immediately lose the position because they never establish control over the hips, never occupy the frames, and never build a stable pin. Others struggle to generate meaningful pressure, constantly reset when their first passing attempt fails, or become stuck cycling through techniques without understanding the purpose behind them.

In this video, we argue that guard passing should not be viewed as a race around the legs. Instead, it should be viewed as the process of pinning, immobilizing, and mounting the hips.

Rather than chasing side control, we show why controlling the hips first allows you to maximize body weight, eliminate movement, neutralize defensive frames, and create effortless transitions into dominant positions like chest-to-chest half guard, the leg weave, mount, and eventually the back.

We also break down how this change in perspective transforms traditional guard passing techniques. Instead of abandoning a pass when it stalls, you’ll learn how to pummel, redirect, and chain your movements together while maintaining pressure until the opponent runs out of options.

BEGINNER’S INTRO TO DEFENSIVE JIU JITSU: TAKEDOWNS, BREAKDOWNS & GETTING UP

Most people think self-defense starts with submissions. It doesn’t. It starts with staying on your feet—and knowing what to do when you don’t.

One of the biggest fears people have about starting Jiu Jitsu is getting taken down. They’re afraid of falling, getting hurt, or being thrown around by someone bigger or stronger.

At KATA, we believe beginners deserve a safer, more structured approach. This 4-week workshop is designed specifically for people with little to no experience. Whether your goal is self-defense, MMA, fitness, or building confidence, you’ll learn the fundamental skills every grappler should develop first.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
• How to safely close the distance & enter the clinch
• Safe, high-percentage takedowns
• How to fall safely & reduce the risk of injury
• How to establish control on the ground
• How to create space & get back to your feet

WHO IS THIS FOR?
• Complete beginners
• Adults interested in practical self-defense
• MMA enthusiasts building a grappling foundation
• Experienced practitioners sharpening their fundamentals
