Why Most Wrestling Shots Fail in Jiu Jitsu (And How to Fix Them)
Excerpts from our latest YouTube video! Link in bio!
Shooting for lower body takedowns is one of the most misunderstood and poorly applied skills in Jiu Jitsu.
There’s no shortage of content around wrestling for BJJ, but what most people miss is how to actually develop, adapt, and apply wrestling shots safely and effectively within a Jiu Jitsu context.
Wrestling has historically been a young man’s sport, with most athletes developing their movement patterns from a very early age. Because of this, many takedown techniques, like the pe*******on step, are often taught as simple, explosive movements that rely on years of built-in coordination and athletic development.
For most adult Jiu Jitsu practitioners, especially beginners and hobbyists, the reality is different:
• Developing the mechanics for a clean wrestling shot is difficult later in life
• Most people lack the foundational movement needed to apply it safely
• In Jiu Jitsu, you’re dealing with different stances and the constant threat of submissions
This creates a gap between what’s taught and what actually works in BJJ.
In this video, we break down:
• Why traditional wrestling shots often fail in Jiu Jitsu
• The limitations of the pe*******on step
• How to modify and apply lower body takedowns in a way that is mechanically sound, safer, and more effective
If you’re trying to improve your wrestling for Jiu Jitsu, this will give you a more realistic and applicable approach.

Gabriel’s journey in Jiu Jitsu reflects everything we aim to highlight in Frame & Form. As one of our littlest members, he reminds us that growth starts with curiosity, energy, and a willingness to try.
Confidence looks different at six. Sometimes it’s a big smile. Sometimes it’s walking onto the mat without hesitation.
We’re grateful to his dad, , a member of our community as well, for allowing us to share and spotlight Gabriel’s journey.
THE OUTSIDE STEP SINGLE! THE BEST SINGLE LEG ENTRY THAT ANYONE CAN DO!
Excerpt from our last post on our other channel. Link in our highlights.
When looking to incorporate lower body takedowns into your game, you must consider three main things: simple and easy entry, low-risk for reversal or compromising your base, and a variety of takedown finishes that can be chained from the connection. One of the best high-percentage, low-risk lower body attacks that checks off all those boxes is the outside step single. This version of a head outside single is quickly becoming one of the most commonly used single leg entries in the sport of wrestling, in both freestyle international and folksyle competition circuits. This variation of the single is great for grappling in that it can easily be adapted for a more upright stance and the mechanics behind the entry are simple enough that even beginners and entry-level takedown practitioners can learn it. In this video, we discuss why this single is ideal for all forms of grappling, how we can set up the entry for jiu jitsu and no-gi grappling, as well as how to chain finishes once we get to the leg.
