The Los Angeles Lakers, led by Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves, have shown they can be a powerful offensive team. However, their success really hinges on their excellent defense, which has been among the best in the league for the past few months.
Recently, though, their defense has been lacking, leading to back-to-back losses against the Chicago Bulls and the Orlando Magic, even with a healthy team. After the loss to the Magic, Reaves shared what the team needs to do to improve on defense, speaking to Spectrum SportsNet:
“We need to focus on the details, play hard every single play, and guard our opponents. We have to work together as a team every time we’re on the court. We need all five players to be in sync.”
Since the Lakers don’t have a strong rim protector, it’s crucial for everyone to stay connected, communicate, and play with energy. Reaves pointed out that while they do have moments of great defense, they can lose focus if the other team makes a few shots in a row:
“At times, we’ve looked good defensively, but it’s not enough. If we’re stopping them, we can’t just stop talking. It’s okay if the other team scores a few times; it happens. We need to keep working hard on defense, even when things aren’t going perfectly. I thought we started off well with communication, but when they scored a few points, we got quiet. We need to keep talking and figuring things out during the game, not just when we’re doing well.”
Reaves also emphasized that in the NBA, any player can get hot, and the Lakers shouldn't let that throw them off their game:
“There are a lot of talented players in the NBA. If someone makes a shot, even if they haven’t been shooting well, that’s just how it goes. You can't panic when unexpected things happen. We need to stay focused, pay attention to the details, and keep competing. We have to bring our energy back up to where it was.”
In the NBA, things can change quickly, especially with so many skilled shooters. Sometimes, a team can play great defense, but the shot still goes in. Regardless, the Lakers must maintain their effort and energy because if they don’t, things can go downhill fast.

The back-and-forth between Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and ESPN host Stephen A. Smith has been a hot topic this NBA season. It all started when Smith urged LeBron, “as a father,” to stop letting his son Bronny James struggle in games after a tough performance against the Philadelphia 76ers.
At the time, many found Smith's comments ridiculous, especially since Bronny has been playing well in both the G League and the NBA in the weeks that followed. Things escalated when LeBron confronted Smith during a Lakers game. The next day, Smith went on a lengthy rant, effectively refusing to apologize for LeBron's concerns.
LeBron hadn't commented on this situation publicly since their confrontation, but he finally spoke out on the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, sharing his humorous take on the whole thing:
“He's acting like he's on a Taylor Swift tour. It started with, ‘I didn’t want to talk about it. I wasn’t going to say anything, but now that the video is out, I feel I should.’ Are you kidding me? If there’s anyone who couldn’t wait for that video to drop, it’s him. And he totally missed the point. I would never tell anyone to stop talking about the game or criticizing players when they're not performing—that's part of the job. But when it gets personal, I need to protect my family and my players. I think a lot of media, including him, should just chill out.”
It seems likely that Smith will respond to LeBron’s comments, especially after what LeBron said at the end of his rant. But it was clear that the Lakers star wanted to share his perspective instead of letting the issue grow.
LeBron doesn’t seem to mind people talking about Bronny the basketball player, but when it comes to LeBron the father, that’s where he draws the line.

When the Los Angeles Lakers made a big trade to bring Luka Doncic over from the Dallas Mavericks, LeBron James quickly recognized him as a key player. He told Doncic and everyone else that it was the Lakers’ job to adapt to Luka, not the other way around.
This was a big moment for Doncic as he started his time in L.A. LeBron has always been the main player on every team he's been a part of for over 20 years. Even when he tried to share the spotlight with Anthony Davis, it usually ended up being LeBron who carried the team.
LeBron recently explained why it was crucial to support Doncic right when he joined the Lakers during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show:
“His nickname is Luka Magic for a reason. His skills on the court show how special he is. When he gets traded after spending seven years with one team, it must feel really shocking. You think you know where you belong, and then suddenly everything changes. Even if he was ready to play, I felt it was important to say that he’s still the main guy. For us to do well, he needs to be himself. We have to figure out how to work together because he has to be himself. I lost a great friend in Anthony Davis, but gaining Luka Magic has been worth it.”
LeBron's warm welcome for Doncic and his commitment to making it clear that it’s his team moving forward has made a difference during this surprising transition. Even though the Lakers haven’t played perfectly, they have come together better than expected considering such a big change mid-season.
Currently, the Lakers are fifth in the West with a record of 43-28, despite losing their last three games. After bringing Doncic on board, the team had a winning streak and proved they can compete against anyone.
