Capoeira Angola of Escola de Capoeira Angola Okupandula is featured in this BBC article, that does a decent job of presenting this tradition.
Rediscovering the African roots of Brazil's martial art capoeira An older form of the Brazilian dance-like martial art has been forgotten by many.
There is a lot of talk in the Capoeira world right now about the bad actions of certain Mestres and authorities within the circle.
Corrupt motivations have turned great Capoeiristas into abusive leaders, and misplaced loyalty has made good students into accomplices for inexcusable behavior.
There are generations of trauma within this microcosm, and no one needs to go back very far to come into direct contact with that violence and exploitation.
So many people--particularly women--have been driven away from the art form because of the abuse and advances of those in authority.
Although it is easy to point fingers and call out those that are now on everyone's lips as abusers; it is difficult to come to terms with how we as students enabled--and continue to support--their abuse.
"Homen quem mata cem,
também mata cento um." ---M. Waldemar
For Angoleiros and Capoeiristas that do this art form from places that are not Brazil, the most important thing--much more important than who can do the prettiest bananeira, or sing the longest ladainha, or kick the hardest--for us the most important thing must be learning how to approach and contribute to the art form without acting as a colonizer.
Hey good people,
Stay stretching, and doing whatever conditioning you can to keep your flexibility and strength up.
Stay progressive and active in your mind and in the world.
Stay musical and poetic in your daily life.
The struggle always continues!
We still are not able to train, but our philosophy remains. Be safe and strong.
We don't post much on social media, but we train hard and approach Capoeira Angola with respect and sensitivity to its traditions.
Capoeira Angola is a beautiful manifestation of the struggle against white supremacy. It is an elegant platform to share philosophy & wisdom, and spread teachings of awareness and survival against treacherous adversity.
It is physically challenging and brings great strength to the bodies that practice it.
It is musically an active meditation that combines rhythm, melody, and harmony to create a trance that can feel super-human to its participants.
Capoeira Angola is not something we do to aggrandize ourselves, but it is something we do so that we can continue to exist in a world that is impatient and destructive to people and traditions that are marginalized.
It is the essence of strength, grace, and genius in the shadow of oppression.
Capoeira Angola classes at Pieter are temporarily on hold in response to Covid-19.

No Class on 12/25 & 1/1!
Still training on Saturday, though.
No Class this Wednesday night 11/27. See you on Saturday morning!

Training on Saturday morning and Wednesday nights. Training, Training, Training. The real word for what we do is "Vadiar." That means something closer to "playing around."
The funny thing is that we call it something that's like a joke--that's no big deal. But when we do it, it feels like work and it makes us strong.
Thanks everyone for coming out on Sunday to play. NO CLASS on Wednesday, but we are back on Saturday morning.
