Today Minnesota will take on Nebraska. Scheduled at 5 pm Pacific Time on the Big 10 Network. Three California wrestlers are scheduled to take the mats for their respective teams. Liam Cronin for Nebraska (125), while Marco Polanco (141) Leticia Frausto Polanco and Andrew Sparks (167) will represent the University of Minnesota. Cronin and Polanco are former Servite alumni while Sparks was a member of the Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana) wrestling team.
The following is a list of wrestlers from 106-145 that competed at the Super 32 tournament from California. It details their best and worst defeat in the tournament.
145 – Oscar Aranda, Jr, St. John Bosco – 2020 4th Masters Meet, 8th at state
Best win – Defeated two-time Kentucky state place winner 5-0.
Worst defeat – Lost via fall to St. Cloud State recruit and three-time Minnesota state place winner Nick Novak in the second period.
145 – M.J. Gaitan, Jr, Temecula Valley – 2020 7th at Masters Meet, State qualifier
Best win – Defeated a two-time Missouri state champion 10-6.
Worst defeat – Lost via a 13-3 major decision to an Ohio Division II state champion and two-time finalist.
145 – Henry Porter, Sr, Gilroy – 2020 1st at Masters Meet, 3rd at state
Best win – Defeated future Ohio State commit Gavin Brown 3-1.
Worst defeat – Lost via a fall to fellow California wrestler M.J. Gaitan.
145 – Gabriel Schumm, Sr, Citrus Hill – 2020 4th at Masters Meet, Top 12 at state
Best win – Schumm has yet to place at the California state tournament. Nevertheless, he was successful in defeating a two-time Missouri state champion 9-3.
Worst defeat – He was defeated via a fall in the first period by a three-time Alabama state champion.
145 – Cade Lucio, Sr, Bakersfield – 2020 3rd at Masters Meet, Top 12 at state
Best win – Despite not earning a medal at the CIF state tournament, Lucio was triumphant in defeating a two-time Pennsylvania state place winner 3-1.
Worst defeat – Lost to an Arizona wrestler who was the runner-up at the 2019 NHSCA tournament. Lucio was up 3-2 going into the third period before Larkin gained the escape and then the winning takedown with 50 seconds left.
145 – Bill Takara, Jr, Temecula Valley – 2020 4th at Masters Meet, 2-2 at state
Best win – Pinned a Georgia state place winner in 1:17.
Worst defeat – Was defeated 8-3 by an Ohio State champion.
145 – Alex Ramirez, Sr, Rowland – 2020 1st at Masters Meet, State champion
Best win – Pinned a kid who has won three state titles; two in Connecticut and one in New York in the second period.
Worst defeat – Lost to an Ohio state place winner 3-0. The Ohio kid earned near-fall and a stalling point in the third period to seal the win.
138 – Noah Tolentino, Jr, Poway – 2020 1st at Masters Meet, Top 12 at state
Best win – Defeated a state qualifier from North Carolina 4-1.
Worst defeat – Lost 8-0 to a two-time Pennsylvania Class AA state finalist.
138 – Nicco Ruiz, So, St. John Bosco – 2020 1st at Masters Meet, 3rd at state
Best win – Won via fall over a two-time Georgia state champion.
Worst defeat – Was beaten via a fall by the 2020 Iowa state champion.
138 – Alec Peralta, Jr, Temecula Valley - ????
Best win – won 8-3 versus a Florida state place winner.
Worst defeat – Lost 11-0 to two-time New York state place winner Rocco Camillaci.
132 – Miguel Estrada, Fr, Frontier – was in middle school last year
Best win – Two key takedowns in the first period were enough for the freshman to get the 4-2 win over the third-place medal winner at the 2020 Indiana state tournament.
Worst defeat – A takedown in overtime ended Estrada’s run at the Super 32 tournament. His opponent was a Florida and NHSCA champion.
132 – Abel Gaitan, Jr, Yucaipa – 2020 8th at Masters Meet, 1-2 at state
Best win – State qualifier Gaitan was triumphant in pinning a Virginia state champion in the second round.
Worst defeat – Gaitan dropped his first match of the tournament when he was defeated 6-0. The wrestler that defeated him was a 2020 New Jersey state qualifier.
126 – Maxximus Martinez, Sr, St. John Bosco – 2020 1st at Masters Meet, 2nd at state
Best win – Martinez kickstarted the event by earning a tough 3-2 win over a kid that won over 60 matches during the 2019-20 season and was a Florida state champion.
Worst defeat – Due to a shoulder injury, Martinez was forced to quit the tournament.
126 – Jack Gioffre, Jr, Buchanan – 2020 3rd at Masters Meet, 4th at state
Best win – A great wrestler on top, Gioffre was triumphant in obtaining near-fall points in the second period and a reversal in the third to win 8-5 over a Wisconsin state champion.
Worst defeat – Lost 12-6 to Drake Ayala from Iowa, the # 1 kid in the country at 120-pounds.
126 – Fernando Barreto, Jr, Rowland – 2020 3rd at Masters Meet, 6th at state
Best win – Defeated a two-time Colorado state place winner thanks to two first period takedowns.
Worst defeat – Lost via a fall in 56 seconds to Dante Rigal of New York.
126 – Devin Avedissian, Jr, Temecula Valley – 2020 4th at Masters Meet, Top 12 at state
Best win – Avedissian’s best win in the tournament happened in the consolation round where he defeated a Tennessee state qualifier 16-1.
Worst defeat – Lost 9-3 versus a two-time Massachusetts state champion. The kid from Massachusetts is legit as he is an NHSCA and Fargo All-American.
126 – Carter Bailey, Sr, Granada – 2020 1st at Masters Meet, 5th at state
Best win – His best match of the tournament came in the consolation rounds where he dominated two-time New York state champion and four-time finalist Jordan Titus 5-2. Bailey scored a takedown in the first and third period of his match.
Worst defeat – His first match of the tournament did not go the way he wanted as he was defeated 6-2 by the 2020 Illinois state champion.
120 – Cisco Cabrera, So, Buchanan – Did not make the Buchanan varsity lineup last year
Best win – While his opponent was winning a state title in his respective state last year, Cabrera was rooting for his teammates at the CIF state tournament from the stands. Nevertheless, the fact that he was wrestling a state champion from Indiana did not intimidate him as he pinned his opponent in the second round.
Worst defeat – After winning four consecutive matches in the championship bracket, Cabrera ran into a brick wall in 2020 Illinois state champion Josh Koderhandt. The match was tied 3-3 going into the third period when Koderhandt was successful in racking up 7 unanswered points to win 10-4.
113 – Logan Valledor, Jr, Vacaville – 2020 3rd at Masters Meet, 0-2 at state
Best win – His best win of the tournament came in the consolation round when he defeated a New York state place winner 3-2.
Worst defeat – After having won two consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, Valledor was knocked out from the tournament by the 2020 Nebraska state runner-up Brandon Baustert Jr 7-3.
113 – Isaiah Kainoa Medina, Jr, Vacaville – 2020 2nd at Masters Meet, 8th at state
Best win – Medina was triumphant in winning his second match in the championship bracket by defeating Ohio state qualifier Gavin Caprella 3-2.
Worst defeat – He lost via a fall in 49 seconds to three-time Alabama state champion Cory Land. Land made history in 2019 when he became the first wrestler from Alabama to become a world team member for the US.
113 – Ethan Perryman, Jr, Temecula Valley – 2020 2nd at Masters Meet, 5th at state
Best win – Perryman made quick work of his Alabama opponent as he pinned him in the second round. At the time of the fall, Perryman was winning 10-3 and had scored four takedowns in the second period.
Worst defeat – Two-time North Carolina state champion Kyle Montaperto was too much for Perryman as he pinned him in the first period with ease.
113 – Collin Guffey, Fr, Granite Hills – Was in middle school last year
Best win – Incoming freshman Guffey was triumphant in advancing to the quarterfinals of the Super 32 tournament. One of his biggest wins in the tournament was when he defeated 2020 Illinois state champion Joseph Fernau 8-2. Guffey scored eight unanswered points in the second and third periods.
Worst defeat – Lost 13-5 to 2019 double Fargo National Champion Jore Volk of Minnesota
106 – Isaiah Quintero, Fr, Valencia – Middle school wrestler last year
Best win – Quintero kickstarted the event by defeating the Arizona 3rd place winner in Class 4A 5-1.
Worst defeat – Lost 7-0 to 2019 Fargo Cadet Freestyle runner-up Dillon Campbell of Ohio 7-0
106 – Grigor Cholakyan, Fr, St. John Bosco – Middle school wrestler last year
Best win – Cholakyan was triumphant in pinning Florida 1A state champion Ethan Rivera in 2:21. The match was not as easy as it looked on paper as Cholakyan was down 4-0 entering the second period. Rivera was sixth at the 2019 Walsh Jesuit tournament and was the No. 2 seed at the Doc Buchanan tournament.
Worst defeat – Lost 5-2 to 2019 Fargo Cadet Freestyle runner-up Dillon Campbell of Ohio 7-0
