Why do you want them more after they hurt you?

I wrote about hysterical bonding this week — the surge of urgent closeness after a betrayal that so many couples mistake for healing. More s*x than you've had in months. Constant texting. Panic at any distance.
It isn't healing. It's your nervous system trying to repair the bond through intensity instead of safety.
Here's the test: healthy desire feels open, hysterical bonding feels gripping.
The episode drops tomorrow. The written piece goes deeper on the five steps out, and on the four fears underneath all of it.
Intensity is not intimacy.

You might be an exaholic if your mind circles back to them and you replay the same conversations over and over again.

If you check their socials, or ask a mutual friend, or do anything that gives you a glimpse into their life. If you rewrite the ending in your head, imagining what you'd say if you ran into them.

And here's a big one — if you feel something intense when they reach out. A rush. Anxiety, then hope. Your nervous system suddenly on high alert.

Put a check mark next to the ones that are you.

The term comes from therapist Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby's 2015 book Exaholics. It is not an official diagnosis and you won't find it in a diagnostic manual — but if you've ever been emotionally addicted to one specific person from your past, you already know how real it is.

7 WAYS TOXIC PEOPLE DRAIN YOU WITHOUT YOU EVEN REALIZING IT.

And sometimes, you don’t realize how much someone is taking from you until you finally get some distance.

1. THEY MAKE YOU QUESTION YOUR REALITY.
You leave conversations wondering if you’re too sensitive, if you misunderstood, or if somehow everything is your fault.

2. THEY MAKE THEIR PROBLEMS YOURS.
Their moods, their chaos, their bad decisions. Somehow, you’re always the one trying to fix things, make things better, or clean up the mess.

3. THEY KEEP YOU IN A CONSTANT STATE OF UNCERTAINTY.
One day they’re loving, the next they’re cold or distant. You become obsessed with figuring out what changed and how to get back to the version of them you miss.

4. THEY MAKE YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR HAVING BOUNDARIES.
You say no, and you’re selfish. You speak up, and you’re the problem. You stop overgiving, and suddenly you’ve changed.

5. THEY KEEP YOU EXPLAINING YOURSELF.
You keep searching for the perfect words to make them understand your feelings. But you cannot explain someone into having empathy or accountability.

6. THEY MAKE YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR EMOTIONS.
You walk on eggshells, monitor their moods, and silence yourself to avoid their anger, disappointment, or rejection. You stop asking what YOU need and start focusing on keeping them happy.

7. THEY MAKE YOU ABANDON YOURSELF.
You spend so much time analyzing them, fixing the relationship, and trying to be enough that you lose sight of your own life, your peace, and your identity.

Let’s be clear: not every difficult person is toxic. Look at the patterns, the accountability, and whether real change happens.

But if a relationship consistently leaves you anxious, confused, depleted, and disconnected from yourself, PAY ATTENTION.

You don’t have to hate someone to recognize that they aren’t healthy for you.

YOU CAN BE SO AFRAID OF LOSING SOMEONE ELSE THAT YOU DON’T EVEN NOTICE YOU’RE LOSING YOURSELF.

And no relationship is worth that price.

You are not broken. You were trained. If you learned love through overgiving, fixing, and earning validation, that pattern can be unlearned.

💬 What relationship pattern are you trying to break?

What happens after you stop repeating the pattern?

Why can't you stop thinking about them?

Not everyone. One person. 🧠 Find your stage → https://quiz.thefantasyloop.com

You replay the same conversations. You check their socials. You rewrite the ending in your head — what you'd say if you ran into them. You compare everyone to them and nobody measures up.

That's the exaholic cycle. The term comes from therapist Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby's book Exaholics, and it is not an official diagnosis — you won't find it in a manual. But if you've been emotionally addicted to one specific person from your past, you already know it's real.

Here's the part nobody says out loud: you're probably not grieving them.

You're grieving the future image you put on them. The version of you that felt most alive. The life you thought was coming.

You are not stuck because they were the one. You're stuck because something in you got hooked.

And anything that's learned can be unlearned.
