The Santa Monica Classic is “only” a 5K or 10K...right?

Ugh...that word “only.”

One of the biggest mistakes we make is assuming that because these races are shorter, they don’t need a goal or a training plan. But having a goal - even if it’s to finish feeling strong - gives your training purpose and keeps you motivated.

If you’re new to racing, your goal might be to complete the distance, run or walk farther than ever before, or cross the finish line smiling.

If you’re an experienced runner, maybe you’re chasing a personal best or a course PR. Just remember: the shorter the race, the harder it is to make big improvements. Knocking even 15–30 seconds off a 5K can take weeks of focused training.

Not sure what your goal should be? Run a time trial. A recent race result or a hard 1-2 mile effort is one of the best ways to set realistic training paces and track your progress.

Choose a training plan that matches where you are NOW, not where you think you should be. Training at the right level builds confidence, keeps you healthy, and gives you the best chance to reach your goal.

⭐⭐ Also…can we agree to retire the words “only” and “just” when talking about training and race distances? Every mile is an accomplishment - whether you’re racing for a PR or cruising at party pace.

It's and with less than 10 weeks away, you may be starting to think about training for the 5K or 10K. No matter what your goal, we have a few tips to get you started:

🎯 Set a goal.
Compete or complete? Whether you're aiming for a PR, testing out a new distance, or simply aiming to cross the finish line smiling, having a goal keeps you - and your training - focused.

📅 Pick the right plan - for you!
Choose one that fits your schedule, current fitness level, and goals. New to speed work? Start with a lower-intensity plan and build from there. LARR has training plans for Levels 1-5 (link in bio)

❤️ Know your why.
Fun, fitness, charity, or a personal challenge - your "why" will keep you moving when motivation dips (those dips get very real when the weather is crumby or you didn't sleep well!).

⌚ Track your progress.
Whether you use an app or a paper calendar, logging your runs helps you stay motivated, notice improvements, and avoid doing too much too soon.

👟 Find your community.
Training with a friend or group makes the miles more fun and helps keep you accountable. 🙌 Join LARR this Saturday as we kick off training for the Santa Monica Classic!
