Portrait of a Place: Venice Beach Football Club
Stanley Brock spotlights the Los Angeles football team connecting marginalized communities in a fast-gentrifying landscape
In a corner of Los Angeles distinguished by its hectic energy and distinctive clash of characters, the Venice Beach Football Club has made the district an unlikely mecca for soccer. Under the shadow of gentrification, this unique football team has played an important role in bringing neighborhoods together – as players, coaches, and organizers, and as a source of inspiration for marginalized communities impacted by a local landscape changing beyond recognition.
For his short documentary Venice Beach Football Club, London-based director Stanley Brock explores how a guerrilla operation grew into a cornerstone of the Venice community, and the biggest pick-up soccer game in the U.S. – a nation where football clubs frequently carry a commercial streak, set up by, and for, the wealthy. Initiating the return of local kids to the old Oakwood park and the concrete handball courts where the team first assembled, founders Dillon Chapman and Tim Walsh have helped reinvigorate the neighborhood’s community spirit through football, promoting access and inclusivity, and stripping hierarchies out of the game.
“Football connects unlikely members of the community, empowering them, providing focus, and the chance to channel their skills and their talent. This unlikely club is a microcosm of the world wide power of football to enhance people’s lives. It’s the beautiful game how it's supposed to be played.”
Against the backdrop of one of the most iconic locations in the world, the Venice Beach Football Club has expanded rapidly over its eight years while staying true to its roots and community focus. Capturing a snapshot of the Venice Beach landscape, and connecting with locals from Oakwood to Boyle Heights, Brock considers the city-spanning influence of this optimistic operation – restoring the game to its humble origins and engaging the vibrant community at L.A.’s core.
