Pilates is body weight training that builds strength while stretching and aligning the entire body. The method strengthens and increases flexibility with low repetitions of precise exercises. Today’s Pilates with a @carbon38 mask 😷
I’ll just start out by saying that this mask is very well designed. It has adjustable ear loops and an adjustable nose bridge.

⭐️Fit: I got the size small and it is the first mask I’ve tried that fits close to my face. The adjustable ear loops allow a lot of flexibility in sizing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Feel: Working out with this mask was a little tough. The mask has a polyester layer on the outside and a cotton layer on the inside. The cotton layer is tightly woven which feels a little rough while working out and started to get a bit damp.

⭐️Breathability: Compared to the other masks I’ve tried, it was a little difficult to breathe in this mask while working out. Not impossible, but not the best.

😁Pros: Very well designed. The shape contours the face well and the adjustable nose bridge and ear loops are key. The tightly woven cotton layer, while not easily to breathe through while working out, makes it a very effective mask. I will definitely use this mask outside the studio as it is easy to breathe though while not working out and feels secure on my face.

Today’s Pilates with a mask 😷 in my new @onzie mask.

⭐️Fit: This mask was just a tiny bit loose on me and the straps are not adjustable. It stayed on fine during my workout and I think the bit of looseness helped it feel less constricting that other masks. I tried it out for teaching and I was great- the first cloth mask that didn’t obscure my voice when teaching. No muffles!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Feel: Working out with this mask was comfortable. The fabric is stretchy and quick drying which is great. I didn’t feel anything while I was wearing it, but when I took it off I did have a little red mark on the tip of my nose where the seam must have been rubbing.

⭐️Breathability: I like this one the best so far for breathability. Nice and easy to breath in.

😁Pros: Lightweight feel, comfortable, doesn’t muffle voice, and it has a pocket on the inside for a filter.

😕Cons: The straps aren’t adjustable and the center seam is a bit bulky.

Pilates with a mask 😷, continued! Today I tried a disposable papermask doing a fast paced🌈advanced reformer workout.

⭐️Fit: This out of the box mask was a little loose on me (but, I do have a very small face!). It stayed on the for entire workout, but it did rise up part way over my eyes a few times.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Feel: This mask was fairly comfortable to workout in. It is very light weight, so it doesn’t feel heavy on your face.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Breathability: The thinness of this mask combined with the pleats made it very easy to breath while working out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
😁Pros: Lightweight feel and high breath ability.💡Also, for teachers this mask doesn’t muffle the voice as much as some of the fabric ones.

What’s it like to wear a mask 😷 while doing Pilates? It depends on the mask! Today I tried out my @outdoorvoices mask doing a flowing 🌈advanced reformer workout.

I find that with a mask, I need to breath through my mouth more that I normally do when practicing Pilates and it gets a little humid under there, but it’s actually not too bad.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Fit: The stretchy ear loops on this mask are tied in a knot which makes them easily adjustable. I was able to make it a little smaller, but there is also room to make it a little bigger.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Feel: This mask was comfortable to workout in and stayed put. While the material is a little thick and slightly warm, it is wicking and stayed dry for the entire workout.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Breathability: The fabric of this mask breathes well. I did find that I needed to breath through my mouth during more strenuous exercises, but I always felt that I was getting enough air.

This was my first time doing a full reformer workout with a mask on and the @outdoorvoices mask worked well. I don’t have anything else to compare it with yet, but I have a few more to try out. I’ll let you know how it goes! 😍

I took some time to work on the long back stretch- Ken Krech’s tip💡for me: practice the transition from teaser into hip circles. Circle the arms and keep the chest open while reaching back for the mat.

This exercise is so fun! 🤸🏻‍♀️Super hard, but it makes me feel like I am 8 years old again playing on the monkey 🐵 bars. Aside from making you feel younger, it moves your back through extension and flexion, opens your chest, and works the upper body 💪(notoriously neglected by runners).

Set up on the Cadillac is key! The trapeze springs should hang straight up and down for the entire exercise. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💡Tip: Push your feet down in to the trapeze as you move to keep it stable.

🏠Home version: Like I’ve said before, nothing can replace the Cadillac. Even this railing.😂 In this version, my goal was to recreate the spine shapes I saw in the Hanging Pull Ups; rounding the back without dumping into the hips or disconnecting from the shoulders, going into extension without over arching the low back or neck, and staying straight as a board while pulling towards the railing.

These “pull-ups” are WAY easier than on the Cadillac, but I did enjoy challenging myself to find all of those body positions! Opening my chest and stretching back was the biggest challenge for me.😬

🔸Reach the cans back behind your hips and pull into your center to lift your spine as tall as you can. Turn your head to the right and stretch open the left shoulder. Turn your head to the left and stretch open the right shoulder.

#ReversePushthrough⚡️This version of the push through works your lower body reach to assist the lift of your sides and back out of your hips, while stretching your chest, and shoulders. So helpful for exercises like rowing on the reformer, roll-over on the mat, teaser on the Wunda chair, so many! What else? 🌈

I try to move the spring🌀without using my arms as much as I can! In order to do that, I squeeze my seat and anchor it to the mat, stretch my legs across the room and pull deep into my low abdominals as I roll my lower back to the mat.

🏠Home version: Roll-up your pillowcase! Use it to keep your arms a steady distance apart and to help you slide smoothly on the floor. Without the spring, you really have to use your powerhouse! Roll back using your back as a guide- only roll back as far as your spine stays round. Squeeze your seat and tuck your tailbone under to keep the lowest part of your back round and power the movement from your center.

#Monkeytime!🐵💕Talk about a back stretch. The monkey is the ultimate stretch for the back of my body. My back gets so tight from running that some days it feels almost impossible to do the monkey! 🙉

Keep the arms straight and pull deep into your center as you point and flex the feet to stretch the entire back and the back of the legs. As you roll back, connect your shoulders strongly to the upper back and pull deep into your low abdominals to straighten your legs up to the ceiling.

🔸Start balancing on the mat with your knees bent and feet hovering a few inches from the ground.

🔸Place your feet in the center of the broom stick, heels together toes apart, pull into your center like crazy as you slowly straighten your legs. The straighter your legs get the deeper you’ll need to pull into your low abdominals to balance.

🔸Point and flex the feet for your stretch and bend in the knees again. I couldn’t manage stretching my legs forward like on the cadillac, so I rolled back instead! Point and flex while you’re upside, bend your knees in and roll up again!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
