Most people barely touch their boom vang, leaving performance on the table.

Once you ease the mainsheet, it stops controlling boom height. That’s where the vang comes in. It takes over, pulling the boom down and controlling twist through the leech of the sail. Without it, the boom lifts, the top of the sail twists off, and you lose power where you actually need it.

There are moments where that’s useful. If you’re overpowered, letting the top spill wind helps. But if you’re trying to move the boat efficiently, especially off the wind, too much twist works against you.

The goal is simple. Keep the top batten running parallel to the boom. Too loose and you lose power. Too tight and you stall the sail.

It’s one of those controls that doesn’t seem important… until you start using it correctly.
