Why I still have hope for coral reefs 08/07/2017

Corals are dying, as we know, but that means we just have to work harder to keep protecting the reefs. This is not the time to give up, but to wake up and take action. There is always hope.

Why I still have hope for coral reefs Corals in the Pacific Ocean have been dying at an alarming rate, particularly from bleaching brought on by increased water temperatures. But it's not too late to act, says TED Fellow Kristen Marhaver. She points to the Caribbean -- given time, stable temperatures and strong protection, corals there…

Our very own Tara Prescott spoke at last year's TedxUCLA event! http://tedx.ucla.edu/project/hike-your-own-hike-tara-prescott/

This year's event is tomorrow: https://www.facebook.com/events/1185094608253332/

Hike your own hike | Tara Prescott | TEDxUCLA Universities are interesting places. For hundreds of years we have been structured with distinct schools, departments, disciplines, focuses and tracks, all built to move you into one of these narrow spaces for a deep dive experience into an area that often become lifelong pursuits. However, if one o...

Great Barrier Reef Obituary Goes Viral, To The Horror Of Scientists 10/14/2016

The Great Barrier Reef is not dead. It is in a lot of danger, but this is a perfect reminder that we still need to take care of our oceans and Earth. This is not the reality we want to see, and now is the time to make the changes to make sure this doesn't happen. But hope is not lost. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/scientists-take-on-great-barrier-reef-obituary_us_57fff8f1e4b0162c043b068f

This class was just brought to my attention happening at UCLA right now. See images for full course details.

"SCUBA Diving Class, intended as a preliminary to scientific diving training will be taught this spring.

Casey Connell will instruct the class

The first meeting of the class will be in Life Sciences Building (room 3326) at 5pm on Wednesday March 30th. Wednesday evening class and pool sessions at UCLA are planned for the Quarter. Ocean dives will be scheduled.

Cost of the class will be $525, payable by the second meeting of the Class, Wednesday April 6th.

The class provides an initial "open water” certification, but will be taught at a more rigorous level, preliminary to formal scientific diving training. This further training is required for any research diving activity associated with universities. It is also required for diving during the Marine Biology Quarter, an undergraduate instructional quarter held at marine labs through the UCLA EEB department."
