Best shoes for jump rope?

Arch support, ankle support, cushioned sole, light weight and shallow tread, they’re all factors. But not all easy to solve.

First, it’s about what your foot needs.

I need arch or instep support. And I do a LOT of jumping. So quality and fit matters so injuries, bone spurs and sprains don’t strike.

If you Google best sneakers with arch support and cushioning, Brooks gets rave reviews.

When it comes to jump rope, community consensus is opt for running shoes or basketball shoes.

Basketball shoes are great because they also have fantastic ankle support.

I need ankle support, but opt for an ankle brace or wrap, rather than added weight potentially from basketball shoes.

Sure, there are some lightweight basketball shoes around but they have a hefty price tag. And I only ever wear out the toes of my shoes, so affordability is key.

Now comes the challenging part.

You may find the perfect shoe, with ideal support, in your favorite colour or style, but what is the tread like?

If the tread is too deep, your rope will constantly get caught.

However, you could always modify your shoes like ballerinas do.

Not my genius idea, that of my daughters, when I was struggling to find the right shoe, with the right support, in the right colour, with little tread. Brilliant idea.

All that’s needed is a little gaffer tape on the sole and Bob’s your uncle!!!

What do I jump in? Well, I was jumping ASICS Gel Plus 2’s, and I loved them.

When I wore them out I tried some Nikes, but they didn’t have enough instep support.

And so for Christmas Santa brought me these Brooks Ghost 15’s.

These are not the latest Brooks, they’re one generation before, because these ones have more arch support.

So after trying last generation and new generation on, and jumping up and down in store, I went with the older model, not the latest, and they’re perfection.

Super comfy jump. Rope didn’t get caught. Nice instep support and excellent bounce!!
