Want a stronger core without doing endless crunches? ⚪

If your balance feels off or your lower back gets tired during everyday activities, your core might not be doing its job.

One exercise we love for improving core stability is the Stability Ball Circle 💪

This movement challenges your core, shoulders, and hips while teaching your body to resist unwanted movement.

Here's why it's so effective 👇

🧠 1. Builds Core Stability

Your abdominal muscles are designed to stabilize your spine, not just create movement.

The Stability Ball Circle teaches your core to stay strong and engaged while your arms create motion around your body.

⚖️ 2. Improves Balance and Coordination

As the ball moves through each circle, your body must constantly adjust to maintain proper alignment.

This improves the communication between your brain and your muscles, which is essential for balance and movement.

🏋️ 3. Strengthens the Shoulders

Your shoulders play an important role in controlling the movement of the ball.

Over time, this exercise can help improve shoulder stability and endurance.

🛡️ 4. Protects the Spine

A stronger core helps reduce unnecessary stress on the lower back during lifting, carrying, reaching, and other daily activities.

How to use this exercise:

• Begin in a plank position with your forearms resting on a stability ball.
• Keep your body in a straight line from your head to your heels.
• Slowly move your forearms in small circles.
• Complete the desired number of repetitions and then reverse directions.
• Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 circles in each direction.

Focus on keeping your hips level and your core tight throughout the movement.

Small, controlled circles will always be more effective than large, uncontrolled movements.

One of the biggest traps in fitness is the idea that you have to do everything perfectly…or it doesn’t count.

You missed a workout, so the week is ruined.
You had a cookie, so the diet is blown.
You skipped a stretch session, so why bother doing the rest?

This kind of thinking is exhausting.

And more importantly, it’s not true.

The people who succeed long-term are not the people who never mess up. They’re the ones who know how to bounce back.

So if you’ve had a rough day, or week, or month…you don’t need to start over.
You just need to take the next step forward.

You’re always one decision away from being back on track.

Think your hamstrings are tight? This simple test might tell you otherwise. 🤔

The Active Straight Leg Raise assessment is one of our favorite movement screens because it gives us valuable information about your mobility, stability, and movement patterns.

At Mint Condition Fitness, we use this assessment to identify limitations that could eventually lead to pain, poor movement, or injury.

Here's why this test matters 👇

🦵 1. Evaluates Hip Mobility

The assessment measures how well your hips move while keeping your pelvis stable.

Limited mobility can affect everything from walking and bending to exercising and getting in and out of a car.

🧠 2. Assesses Core Stability

This isn't just a flexibility test.

Your core must stabilize your body while one leg moves through a full range of motion. Difficulty controlling the movement can reveal stability limitations that traditional stretching won't fix.

⚖️ 3. Identifies Movement Asymmetries

Can one leg move higher than the other?

Differences between sides can indicate mobility restrictions, muscle imbalances, or compensation patterns that may increase your risk of injury.

🚶 4. Improves Exercise Selection

Understanding your movement limitations helps determine which exercises will provide the greatest benefit while reducing unnecessary stress on your body.

How to perform the assessment:

• Lie flat on your back with both legs extended.
• Keep one leg completely straight and pressed into the floor.
• Slowly raise the opposite leg as high as possible without bending either knee.
• Compare both sides.
• Pay attention to differences in range of motion and whether your opposite leg stays stable.

Remember, this isn't about forcing your leg higher.

It's about understanding how your body moves and identifying opportunities for improvement.

When your knee hurts, it is natural to assume that the problem is coming directly from the knee.

Sometimes that is true. But not always.

One of the things we look at when someone comes to Mint Condition Fitness with knee discomfort is how the joints above and below the knee are moving. That means looking mostly at the hip and ankle…and it’s the ankle that most often is overlooked.

In this week's video, we are going to show you three simple ways to improve ankle mobility and see if it helps your knees move and feel better.

Did you try the exercises in the video? Did anything change in your knee movements afterward? Tell us in the comments!

Struggling with shoulder stiffness or finding it harder to reach overhead? 🤔

As we get older, we naturally lose mobility in our shoulders and upper back. That can make everyday activities like putting dishes away, lifting luggage, or reaching for something on a high shelf feel much more difficult.

One exercise we love for improving shoulder strength and mobility is the Alternating Z Press 💪

Because you're seated on the floor with your legs extended, this exercise challenges your shoulders, core, posture, and mobility all at the same time.

Here's why it's worth adding to your routine 👇

🏋️ 1. Builds Shoulder Strength

The Alternating Z Press strengthens the muscles responsible for pressing and reaching overhead, helping you maintain functional strength for everyday activities.

🧠 2. Improves Core Stability

Without the support of a bench, your core has to work much harder to keep your spine stable and your posture upright.

🧍 3. Reinforces Better Posture

Many adults spend too much time sitting with rounded shoulders and a flexed spine.

The upright position of the Z Press encourages better alignment and helps strengthen important postural muscles.

✨ 4. Enhances Shoulder Mobility

The seated position limits compensation from the lower body, allowing you to focus on improving shoulder mobility and overhead movement.

How to use this exercise:

• Sit on the floor with your legs extended.
• Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height.
• Keep your chest tall and your core engaged.
• Press one arm overhead while keeping the opposite arm in the starting position.
• Alternate sides with each repetition.
• Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions per arm.

If sitting on the floor feels uncomfortable, elevate your hips on a small pad or bench to maintain good posture.

Most injuries don't happen because of one bad movement. They happen because small problems go unnoticed for months or even years. 🤕

Tight hips. Poor balance. Weak muscles. Limited mobility.

Over time, these issues add up until something finally breaks down.

The good news? Many injuries can be prevented before they ever start. 💪

Here are 4 ways to stay ahead of pain and keep your body moving well after 50 👇

🧠 1. Get Assessed Before You Get Injured

You can't fix what you don't know exists.

Simple movement assessments can identify limitations in strength, mobility, balance, and stability before they become bigger problems.

🏋️ 2. Build Strength Consistently

Muscles protect your joints.

Strength training helps improve bone density, joint stability, posture, and movement quality, all of which reduce your risk of injury.

🧘 3. Prioritize Mobility

When joints lose mobility, other areas of the body are forced to compensate.

Regular mobility work helps you maintain healthy movement patterns and reduces unnecessary stress on your body.

🚶 4. Don't Ignore the Small Warning Signs

Stiffness, aches, reduced balance, and difficulty with everyday activities aren't just normal parts of aging.

They're often early warning signs that your body needs attention.

How to get started:

• Assess your movement patterns.
• Strength train at least 2 to 3 times each week.
• Add mobility exercises to your daily routine.
• Address limitations early instead of waiting for pain.

The goal isn't just to avoid injuries.

The goal is to keep doing the things you love for decades to come. 🌟

And if you need help getting started, our Thrive-in-5 Program is built just for that.

We’ll assess how your body moves, identify what may be holding you back, and show you the clearest path to getting active again.

A fall can happen in a second.

You catch your foot on a step. You lose your balance getting out of the shower. You turn too quickly, miss a curb, or feel unsteady walking on an uneven surface.

For younger adults, a fall is often embarrassing more than anything else. But as we get older, the consequences can become much more serious.

A fall can lead to injury, loss of confidence, reduced activity, and in some cases, a major change in independence.

That is why fall prevention should not begin after someone has already fallen.

It should begin years earlier.

Congratulations to our September Member of the Month: Carol B! She has been at Mint since 2024, in order to stay active and keep up her outdoors activities. Carol enjoys creating art and that includes walking or hiking to good painting spots!

She never misses a session and works hard every single time she’s here at Mint. That work has shown in improved balance and strength. For example, balance drills that were initially challenging she now performs with her eyes closed! And the other week her coach reports Carol completed good-looking deadlifts with increased weight. Outside of Mint she keeps up her walking every day.

Carol is also a lovely conversationalist, happy to chat with staff and other Minters. She’s worked with all of our coaches at one time or another and is always a pleasure to have in. The team agreed this nomination has been a long time coming; congrats again, Carol!
