Warrior Wednesday: The Posture of Power
“But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags.” — Isaiah 64:6 (NKJV)
Every martial arts journey begins with a bow. We step onto the mat with open, empty hands. It is a physical declaration that says we have brought no weapons and no preconceived notions of our own skill.
But how often do we try to approach God with our hands completely full?
“We all come to God with our hands full. We carry our achievements, our good deeds, our religious efforts... We try to present these things to God as a payment, hoping they will be enough to earn His favor” (Empty Hands, Dr. Spencer R. Fusselman D.Min.).
The hard truth is that our self-generated righteousness is like filthy rags before a perfectly holy God. You cannot receive the incredible grace and power God has for you if your hands are tightly gripping your own pride, ego, and worldly strength.
“The posture of the martial artist at the edge of the mat and the posture of the sinner at the foot of the cross are the same. They are postures of humility, of acknowledgement that we cannot do it on our own. It is the posture of the empty hand” (Empty Hands).
Emptying your hands isn’t a sign of weakness; it is the starting position for true spiritual power.
“When we come to God with our empty hands, having let go of our pride and self-effort, He fills them. He fills them with forgiveness, with His Holy Spirit, with a new identity, with a glorious purpose...” (Empty Hands).
Drop the filthy rags today. Bring your empty hands to the Master, and let Him equip you for the real fight.
