After nine incredible years, we have some bittersweet news to share with our Exhale family. Exhale Yoga will be closing its doors at the end of the year. Finding the right words to share this news has been very difficult, but I’ll try.
When Exhale Yoga opened, I could never have imagined what it would become. Of course, it’s a yoga studio… but somewhere along the way, it became much more than that. It became a community. A place where friendships were formed, people showed up for one another, where we laughed, cried, grew, struggled, celebrated and every once in a while actually did some yoga.
Some of you have been with us from the beginning. Others have walked through our doors more recently. But every single person who has practiced here, taught in this space, supported, recommended or simply made Exhale part of their life has helped create something incredibly special. I am so proud of what we created and the small (or big) impact we’ve had on so many lives.
For me personally, it’s been a family affair in the truest sense. Getting to share this place with my Mom and Dad, both as teachers and as part of the heart of Exhale, is something I will always treasure. With that being said, I want my parents to enjoy retirement to the fullest. Most of you know that my family moved to Starlight, Indiana last year. Living 45 minutes away and running the studio from a distance has become increasingly difficult. Mom and Dad have had to pick up more responsibilities. I don’t want them worrying over day to day aspects of the business and covering classes last minute, especially when I can’t afford to pay them for all they do.
Beyond personal reasons, there’s been difficulty discussing the lease with building management, let alone agreeing to terms. This would be our third extension to the original lease. To put it nicely, each time negotiations have been slow and frustrating. Our studio depends heavily on 6 + 12 months memberships. Since our lease was coming up again in December, we started asking questions back in spring. With such little communication, I didn’t feel comfortable selling long term packages. On top of that, I’ve needed to switch payment and scheduling software for quite some time due to skyrocketing fees. Insurance is up for renewal at the end of year. Not feeling solid on the lease makes it difficult to move forward with anything.
At some point, you have to recognize when a season of life has run its course or if the universe it trying to tell you something. This isn't a decision made out of sadness or because something went wrong. It's simply time. Financially and practically, keeping the studio open no longer makes sense and personally, I'm ready to see what the next adventure holds.
I’ve been preparing for this post mentally, but that doesn’t make moving forward any easier. Please be mindful over the coming weeks when attending class and discussing with others. We told management we would not be renewing our lease over a month ago. They have yet to respond to questions regarding a timeline to leave the building. Our goal is the keep the schedule similar to what it’s been, with maybe a few tweaks along the way. We will communicate information as soon as possible. Please keep practicing with us and encouraging new students to attend til the end. Give our teachers space and grace as they lead their classes. Teaching is their priority and I plan to post and share more over social media now that this news is officially out there.
Any current packages and memberships will be honored through their applicable dates… this may be explain why I offered 3-4 month packages while waiting for communication with building management. We hope to make the transition as simple and fair as possible. October 26th will be the last day for MINDBODY payments and scheduling. Once that contract comes to an end, we will only accept Venmo and cash payments. All MINDBODY monthly auto-debits will stop at the end of this month. If your auto-debit falls on the last 5 days of the month, it will deduct on or around October 26th.
There’ll be plenty of time for goodbyes later. For now, I mostly want to say thank you. Thank you for trusting us. Thank you for supporting a small business for nine years. Thank you for bringing your friends and families through our doors. Thank you to every teacher who has shared their time and talent here. And thank you for turning a yoga studio into something that has felt so much like a family.
I'm incredibly proud of what we built together.
We've still got a few months left and I promise to teach some of my best classes yet.
Let's make it count.
