My new buddy, well, not really new cuz he is one from my buckskin stallion and golden champagne mare with silver gene, but he and I are buds. I will start under saddle when it cools down!

Sadly, the old pregnant mare that had a filly at her side when I brought her home last fall passed yesterday morning. She had an advanced stage of heaves, which is basically horse COPD. The heat and pollen made it worse than in winter. I gave her vet prescribed meds 2x a day, kept her cool, and tried to keep weight on her as well. Her heart was working overtime and I had ordered a horse nebulizer for abuteral, but I knew in my heart she was probably in end stage of life. Her heart was working so hard to get oxygen to her body and her body was working so hard to push air out of her damaged airways and lungs, it was a losing battle. Her c**t is about 4 months old and was hanging more and more with my big grey mule, so timing for him was good. Her last years filly is doing well, and I am glad I could give her a peaceful last year of her life. I’d gained her trust and she was enjoying pets and brushing. She felt safe and picked her happy safe space and I allowed her to stay in that spot. That is where I found her and her c**t when I got home from work and went in to give her evening meds. I was expecting this from my medical background. I allowed her c**t to come and go and he chose to stay with her until I locked him outside this am. A few minutes of calling and he is out with his mule babysitter. Thank you Lord for making this easy on me.

This is where great fitting saddles are made. Production came to a screeching halt when the bigger sister tornado deposited the very large oak tree onto & through the roof. The long awaited rebuilding of roof, trusses and interior will be starting very soon. I am going to be moving all contents (now all stacked in middle) into a storage container to make it easy for work crew. (And me!) New metal roofs are scheduled for the shop building, big barn and humble house. Saddle building will resume as soon as repair on shop is completed & equipment with inventory is set back up.

This week I lost my little buckskin dun pony size MFTH stallion. He acted colicy when I got home. It was very hot, and I figured he needed some help, checking his vitals and all four quadrants of his gut sounds. I checked his gums, and his heart rate was elevated. Gave Banamine. No tenting on neck skin so I gave him simethacone for gas, waited 20 minutes, then mineral oil to help move things along if he needed that. He seemed to feel better, drank from his Ritchie waterer, and laid down in the shade. Now mind you, I am administering all this by mouth, and noticed nothing unusual on either side. 4 hours later at night (I’m checking every hour) he is standing close to the house in his large paddock and head hanging. Hes been having shooting diarrhea and now I’m thinking pepto bismol! But first activated charcoal in case he ate a toxic w**d! Talked with vet thruout this ordeal and followed her instructions. I go to administer charcoal and notice two puncture wounds on his face and swollen on that side. Snake bite!!! Wide fang marks, big snake! Dr said give injection of steroid, tetanus booster, and antibiotics IM. Done. Up a night a day and another night. Lost him during the second night. I’m heartsick but feel so badly that he suffered. The snakes are hot and thirsty. Be careful out there. We are thinking timber rattler or cottonmouth. It’s got a little pond in his paddock and a big pond across the lane. He was so sweet, and so willing! I was so looking forward to riding him. Nothing fazed this boy!

This is a saddle built by David Hedgpeth maybe 30-45 years ago. It was built for a mule. It is my personal saddle now and it’s high quality materials and workmanship. It has scalloped skirts, double in skirt rigging ( center fire rigging works well on mules). I have also used it on a beloved mare with THE BEST “bare back riding” top line.
