Become a Referee

To register for a class, go online to www.gareferees.com

Classes: There are 2 Entry Level Classes, one for students that are U15 as of Jan 01 of current year and on for those who are 15 years of age or older. There is no minimum or maximum age to become a referee. Students will need to be able to pass the online class and participate in the classroom and field training. The entry level class for U15 students will be a Gr09 class. Entry level class for students that are 15 and over will be a Gr08 class. These are the ONLY options to register as a referee.

Gr09 Entry Level Content: The students are taught all of the Laws of the Game at a level appropriate for beginning referees officiating youth soccer at younger age groups. There is an online Laws of the Game session and an eight-hour weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) session in the classroom and on the field and a final exam. All online content must be completed before attending the class.

Gr08 Entry Level Content: Information in the class is the same as a Gr09 class, but the information is taught at a more advanced level to be used in the higher level matches encountered by a Gr08 referee. Session time will be the entry level course online as well as a nine hour weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) session in the classroom and on the field and a final exam. All online content must be completed before attending the class.

Cost: The total cost is $90, which breaks out as $50 for the class and $40 for registration with the United States Soccer Federation. All fees are paid up front and are not refundable. A basic “starter kit” including a uniform, whistle, flags, and notebook – everything you will need except for shoes and a watch and pencil – runs less than $60 and is available from several vendors online. The total cost will be about $150.

Signing up: To register for a class, go online to www.gareferees.com. You can either click Login and create your own user name and password then, or click on Sign up for a Class, where you will later be asked to create your username and password. That will remain your Login forever (although you can change the username and password any time).

Adult Grade 8: A Referee Grade 8 is able to work any youth games.

Referee Grade 9: A Referee Grade 9 is a Recreational Referee. You will be able to be a Center Referee for Recreational Games only, U-14 and younger. You will be able to run lines (Assistant Referee) for all levels, U-14 and younger.

The Entry Class for R9 is designed for persons under 15 years of age. It has two parts, an online session and a classroom/field session that focuses on how to officiate. Both sessions are required. The online session must be done first and can be done at any time. Allow 2 - 6 hours to complete.
Register for a class, then log in and begin the Session Tracker. Follow the directions on the screen.
Then attend the class. There will be low-intensity field work at the class, so dress appropriately.
