Messing up doesn’t tell me everything about your character. What you do after we talk about it tells me a whole lot more.

You might need a minute to calm down. I get that. But when you can listen, recognize where you went wrong, and care enough to make a change, we can work with that.

If every conversation turns into “I ain’t trying to hear all that,” how are we supposed to move forward? You have to be willing to hear something that’s uncomfortable and take an honest look at yourself.

I had people who cared enough to have those conversations with me. People who had my back and helped me grow. It’s my job to pay that forward. I care about the people I coach the same way I care about my own kids. I want to see you grow, and sometimes that means telling you something you don’t want to hear.

When somebody you trust corrects you, do you listen or immediately defend yourself?

You Control You.

Who’s your hero? Think about that for a second.

I heard Matthew McConaughey talk about his hero being himself in 10 years, and that stuck with me. There’s a version of you that you haven’t met yet. But the choices you make today are helping build that person.

How you show up. How you treat people. What you follow through on when nobody is watching. That’s where becoming someone you’re proud of starts.

Ten years from now, what do you want to be able to say about who you became? And what are you doing today to move toward that?

You Control You.

You say you want to be understood, but are you willing to learn how your partner communicates?

We’re getting messy on You Control You. This conversation gets into emotional maturity, accountability, affection, and what happens when frustration turns into resentment. I’m reacting to Sarah’s take on women and marriage, and talking about the responsibility men have to build connection too.

Fellas, the little things matter. Hug her. Kiss her. Let her know you see her outside of the moments when you want something. And for both people, say what you need. If the message isn’t landing, slow down and have the conversation.

I’ve been divorced. My ex-wife and I both had growing up to do, and we’ve talked about that. Accountability means being willing to look at yourself too.

How do you and your partner work through the days when you don’t feel connected? Let’s talk. 👇

I was blessed to have people who didn’t give up on me.

Most of the fellas I grew up with didn’t have dads around. But there were dads on that block who became like pops to me too. Looking back, I’m grateful for the place they had in my life. Those men mattered.

How do I pay that back? By showing up for somebody else. By believing in someone who might not believe in themselves yet. By giving my time and sharing what I’ve learned.

That’s a big part of why I coach. The people who poured into me helped shape the man I am, and I get to carry some of that into the lives of the people I work with.

Who showed up for you when you needed somebody? Give them some love in the comments.

If you’re hungry, say you’re hungry. If you want something, say what you want. Why are we making the people we love play a guessing game and then getting upset when they get it wrong?

We’re getting a little messy on this episode of You Control You. I’m talking about men, women, marriage, and how we communicate what we need. From dropping hints to saying “I’m fine” when you’re clearly not, little conversations can turn into unnecessary frustration.

And then there’s respect. You might never tell your partner they’re not good enough, but what is your tone saying? What is your attitude saying? That’s a question worth asking yourself, whether you’re a man or a woman.

You can’t control somebody else’s response, but you can take responsibility for how you speak and how you listen. You Control You.

Let’s talk about it. Should your partner pick up on your hints, or is it your responsibility to say what you need? 👇

Sometimes I’m upset, and trying to figure out exactly why just keeps me stuck in my head.

I’m grateful for the lessons that taught me to feel anger, frustration, or sadness without needing an immediate explanation. Sometimes the feeling settles. Sometimes the understanding comes later.

Do you give yourself room to feel, or do you immediately start overthinking?

You Control You.

“Love you, Dad.”
“Love you, Son.”

Every day. Multiple times a day. My son is going to hear that from me.

If I miss you, I’ll tell you. If I’m thinking about you, I’ll tell you. The people I love shouldn’t have to guess how I feel.

Did you grow up hearing “I love you”?

You Control You.

What can training fighters teach us about leading people?

Hannah Bauer and Coach ShaH discuss how controlled challenges reveal gaps, why feedback matters during difficult moments, and how practicing under pressure gives people opportunities to adapt.

From finding your composure to creating space for honest feedback, this conversation connects martial arts preparation with building stronger teams.

How do you prepare yourself and your team for difficult situations?

Two matches of experience. An opponent with nearly 100. How do you keep that from getting in your head?

One of our fighters shares what competing against adults at 15 taught him about nerves, keeping things simple, and trusting himself in jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. He also recalls a Chael Sonnen analogy that helped shape his perspective.

Focus on your job. Accept the challenge. Enjoy getting to compete.

What helps you stay focused before a competition?

You Control You.

Would you want your mother or sister to date someone who behaves like you?

It’s an uncomfortable question, but it makes you look at whether your actions match the standards you have for others.

In this You Control You clip, we talk about accountability and the example you’re setting, including for the children you may have someday.

Are you holding yourself to the standards you want for the people you love?
