❄️ Winter Water Safety Tip ❄️

Frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers can look magical this time of year, but ice isn’t always as strong as it seems. Kids may feel curious about exploring frozen surfaces, so it helps to chat with them about staying on safe ground and keeping playtime off the ice.

A simple conversation keeps winter fun and helps little ones understand how to stay safe while they enjoy the season.

💦 Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. 💦

Water safety is about layers of protection, not just one solution. At SafeSplash, we follow the S.P.L.A.S.H. method, supported by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, to help keep families safer in and around the water:

🏊 S – Swim Lessons: Learn life-saving skills year-round
🧸 P – Put Away Toys: Reduce temptation when the pool isn’t in use
🦺 L – Life Jackets: Use USCG-approved jackets when near open water
👀 A – Adult Always Watching: Designate a distraction-free water watcher
🚪 S – Shut All Gates: Use self-closing, self-latching gates and proper safety equipment
🛟 H – How to Rescue: Learn CPR and rescue skills

📣 MYTH vs FACT — Floaties in the Pool 🏊‍♂️

MYTH:
Floaties or water wings keep my child safe in the pool.

FACT:
Floaties/Puddle Jumpers are not safety devices. They are toys — not life-saving gear — and can give both kids and adults a false sense of security. Pool floats like arm bands can slip off or deflate, and they don’t protect a child from drowning.

👉 Floaties/Puddle Jumpers can also interfere with learning real swimming skills because they keep kids in a vertical position and don’t help them practice proper floating or swimming techniques.

✨ THE BEST WAY TO PROTECT CHILDREN IN THE WATER:
✔️ Enroll them in swim lessons so they build real water competency
✔️ Use proper USCG-approved life jackets around open water
✔️ Always provide active, close supervision — arms-length and distraction-free — whenever kids are in or around water.

💙 Swim lessons + vigilant adults = confidence and real safety in the water.
