Last weekend was a blast! Thank you to everyone who joined us at Wisconsin United Roller Derby 's first home bout - in Baraboo! We loved hosting our friends from Iowa, Ames Roller Derby Association, who were absolutely incredible.

We were so grateful to all our officials, skating and nonskating alike - derby doesn't happen without you and you're always very kind to WURD. H Liz Walker helped us organize a proper Thank You gift for Liz Ellis upon their retirement from derby officiating after a 15 year career - we love you A Grue, happy knitting!

We had some key volunteers who made us feel derby official, including Jon Obst, Emily Mills, and Cristeta German who kept the score, announced, and kept all the trains running on time. Thanks to our paramedics for your time and good care. Extra big thanks to Madison Roller Derby for the use of their track kit and sound system, and for signing up for our post-bout mixer! Thanks to Sky’s Edge Photography for capturing the night - photos coming soon!

Thanks to our mixer skaters, too - it was great to make new friends and have fun skating a second game while gassed! 😅 We had many more volunteers who made things work so well - thank you!

And the biggest thanks to our fans, friends, family, and complete strangers who showed up to cheer us on - we were expecting empty seats and that wasn't the case! 🥰

WURD is Wisconsin's only all-gender league and welcome derby curious folks to check us out - we'd love to skate with you!

Mama and Chevy drove up to Baraboo last week to meet with staff at Pierce Pavilion, where we'll be bouting against our friends from Ames Roller Derby Association on the 26th. Afterwards they kept an old tradition alive by scouting out food from the A&W + KFC combo just down the street. It was a regular stop by WURD members and friends following mixers hosted by the Baraboo crew back in the day.

Mama was up in Ashland this week and had the privelege of catching a trail skate with Crash and Doc from Cheq Bay Roller Derby. The best thing about derby is making new derby friends!

Wisconsin United Roller Derby was built by trans skaters and allies. While we don’t always get it right, we are always striving to be a space where people of all genders can skate.

Today, the Supreme Court ruling wrongly decided that trans athlethes do no get the opportunity to freely engage in the sports of their choice.

As Judge Sotomyer wrote in her dissenting opinion, sports can "help build resilience, tenacity, leadership, and discipline. It can lead to life-long friendships, community, and a sense of belonging. It can bring joy and the thrill of victory, along with all the lessons one learns from experiencing defeat. The benefits are immense."

Trans athletes are being kept from those experiences due to hysteria that does not align with actual facts.

Despite this gross misplacement of justice, WURD, as a community of athletes, will keep standing with and advocating alongside our trans teammates, family, and friends to have access to dignity, joy, and sports.
