We teach the Olympic sport of modern competitive fencing and support the fencers of Madison, Wisconsin, and the greater Midwest!

Badger Fencing Club is run by head coach Brian Duckwitz, a certified Prévôt (Level 4) in Epee and Foil, and a Moniteur (Level 3) in Sabre through the United States Fencing Coaches Association. Brian is also the head coach of the University of Wisconsin Fencing Club. Before starting BFC, Brian coached fencing at Madison Fencing Academy and grew a successful fencing program at UW-Rock County, where

What if you started fencing in college with zero experience… and a few years later you were team captain — and then coaching saber?

In the newest episode of First to 15, Deep Patel shares how he went from soccer/lacrosse athlete to fencing walk-on to leader — and what made his growth accelerate: transferable footwork, mindset shifts from team sports to individual bouts, learning the rules faster than most beginners do, and staying relentlessly curious.

We also talk about post-college fencing (it doesn’t have to be “see you at Vet 40”), and how clubs — especially newer ones — can create more ways for people to stay connected to fencing for life.

BFC CLOSED 12/18

Because of the predictions of very dangerous, slippery roads, BFC will be closed tonight.

Although we usually follow the Madison School District cancellations, this time it seems like everyone around Madison is canceling as well as some of the smaller schools in the city.

ACCESS TO GEAR FOR THE ROC/RJCC THIS WEEKEND

If you need to get your gear to travel to the tournament this Saturday and Sunday, Coach Brian will be at the club tomorrow from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. If that does not work for you, please send him an email to arrange a time.

Please reach out if you have questions,

With all the snowy weather recently, we wanted to remind everyone that BFC follows the Madison School District on closures. If school or after-school activities are cancelled, BFC will be closed as well.

Where has Coach Brian been the last few days, you ask?

He spent 4 days at Nova Fencing participating in the annual United States Fencing Coaches Association Coaches Academy. He'll be back at the club today full of new ideas, approaches, and skills.

He also tested for and passed his practical exam for Prevot of Sabre, the level 4 coaching certification! Now that he has that certification level in all three disciplines, he's a Prevot d'Armes. Congratulations!

Congratulations to our beginner class graduates! (And thank you very much to Ashli for taking photos of their graduation ceremony on Wednesday!)
As a reminder, Badger Fencing Club will be closed for the holiday weekend. We reopen on Wednesday for the next session of fencing!

Volunteer Photographer Needed!
(From Melissa)
Tonight all beginners are "graduating" with a little ceremony at the end of their class time. I usually take photos for the club's social media and newsletter...but I have to be at my daughter's school for drop-in night at the exact same time! Anyone willing to take photos of graduation and email them to [email protected]?

Have you met Coach Drew?
Assistant Coach Drew Shaw (he/him) recently joined us from Austin, TX, where he has been fencing and coaching for the last 14 years. He is an experienced competitor who previously qualified for the Junior Olympics in foil.
Coach Drew loves adapting teaching styles to help fencers with unique strengths and challenges. He usually assists with our beginner classes in all age categories, but you can often spot him helping with other classes or during open fencing hours.
