Hope you're not tired. We still have the northern end to cover.

The area of the Apache Plume is a favorite place of the game and cattle to lay down out of the sun.

For two days we had to watch and beat the rain. It may be flooding, but a sure way to go to cowboy hell is to complain about rain in New Mexico. A wise neighbor of ours once said: "we can fix roads and ditches, but we can't grow grass."

After lunch we head south to check on more cattle and range.

Riccardo lends a hand with the cattle.

Many of our guests, lend a hand helping us with checking on the cattle. First they have to learn what to look for and how to get close enough to identify any problems.

Everyone thinks of cattle work as being branding, roping, or gatherings, but those events happen a few days a year. Mostly, one is just looking for injured or sick cattle, signs of predators, or other unusual occurrences with water or fence.

The perks are getting to ride a horse and getting to enjoy nature and the country side while being stewards of the cattle.

Time to put the theory into practice that Riccardo has learned.

We are pedantic about how we ride. Practice doesn't make perfect...practice makes permanent. It is important not to practice incorrect techniques as not to make it harder to improve later.

Now it is time to enjoy the ride and refine the skills.

Wow! We have been very busy. I am way behind on posting about our wonderful guests and what they have done at Concho Hills Guest Ranch.

Lets try and catch up.

Riccardo makes his move from theory to the round pen, and then to the arena.

This is necessary for both the rider's safety and the horse's safety as well, especially if one is not trail riding.

All of our guests, regardless of experience, attend our New Mexico Vaquero Horsemanship Clinic before they ride at Concho Hills.

Our guests learn western riding from the ground up. From how the horses have been trained, the fit and proper sitting of the western saddle, to the form fit and function of the bridles and bits that we use.

An Adventuresome Traveler:

All the way from Singapore, Italian guest Riccardo joined us for a week of riding.

We really enjoyed the conversations about current conditions of places he has visited during his travels.

He recently came back from one of the Mongolian horse adventures in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park.

Our last guest and I spent a couple of days dodging late October showers. At least we were back in time to stay dry and enjoy the results.

I don't recall many rainbows at sunset. How lucky!

Last week we finally got a break in the rain to get some time in on the horses.

It is rare that Marilyn and I get a chance to ride together.

The plains are green because of the rain. It sure is enjoyable.
