SWA Storm Volleyball

Congratulations to Senior and 2 year Storm player Camille McKnight on her signing with CBC this morning! We are so proud of you and look forward to catching some games in the fall!!

I want to tell you what club volleyball is actually doing to your daughter.

And I don't mean her vertical jump. I don't mean her serve. I don't mean anything that shows up in a highlight video or on a recruiting profile.

I mean the other stuff.

The stuff that's happening so gradually you almost miss it.

She is learning that hard work and immediate results are not the same thing. That you can do everything right and still have a bad tournament. That effort is not a transaction where the reward comes right away. That you keep going anyway. Most adults are still working on this. She's learning it at fourteen.

She is learning how to be part of something bigger than herself. How to celebrate someone else's success even when you wanted that success for yourself. How to show up for your team on a day when showing up is the last thing you feel like doing. How to be the kind of person that other people can count on. These are not volleyball skills. These are life skills. And she is getting a masterclass.

She is learning how to handle failure in public. This one might be the most important thing on this list. Because life is full of moments where you fall short in front of other people and you have to decide right then who you are going to be in that moment. She is practicing that decision over and over again in gyms across this state and she is getting better at it every single time.

She is learning what her body can do. She is learning that she is stronger and more capable than she thought. She is learning to trust herself under pressure. She is learning that the voice in her head that says you can't do this is not always telling the truth.

And she is learning — maybe most importantly of all — that she has a parent who believes in something she loves enough to show up for it. Every weekend. Without being asked. Without needing credit.

She is learning what unconditional support looks like.

And she will spend the rest of her life knowing how to give it to other people.

Because someone gave it to her first.

That's what this sport is doing to your daughter.

You're welcome to keep calling it volleyball if you want.

But we both know it's bigger than that.

I’ll be honest, I’m exhausted. Some days are hard, some days I question if it’s worth it or if I’m doing enough for these girls. But at the end of every season I don’t find myself thinking about the tough days. I see the faces of these girls, I see that families who have sacrificed their schedules and lives to provide this opportunity for their child and I begin to look forward to the next year.

Thank you Storm family for another season. Your girls are loved and we are so thankful for each one of them.

18u had their last practice of the season tonight! Most of these girls will be moving on and graduating this year and we are thankful to have had them as a part of Storm.
