Ten for 10: Depth and dedication help Mira Costa surfers ride a decade-long streak of success
Last year’s inaugural South Bay Paddle was dominated by San Diego paddlers. San Diego was again well represented again this year, but the tide swung. Saturday’s three fastest times, and six of the top 10 times were by South Bay Paddlers.…

The SBSSA 2018-2019 contest season concluded with Men's finals day in the All-Stars competition. All six of Costa's entries in the All-Stars had made it through an earlier round the week before, and Zach Rosenberg and Alex Fry won their Round 2 heats on this day to go right through to the final, where they ultimately placed 2nd and 3rd.
We finally got a scholastic contest in during some thumping swell - but who would have guessed it would have taken place in mid-May? It has been a strange school year for waves and weather, and this was probably a fitting conclusion. Powerful head high south swell had enough west in it to deliver the goods to 26th St. The shape was pretty good, the rides fun, but the paddling was brutal, with current constantly sweeping competitors north out of the contest zone. Parker Browning nabbed a buzzer be**er in his quarterfinal heat to make it through to the repercharge, and he just barely got out that. But by the time he got to the final, he had the kinks worked out and was on fire, taking the win. Costa's Zach Rosenberg and Alex Frey finished 2nd and 3rd.

The continuation of the All-Stars event, with quarters, semis and finals run for the Women as well as Men's Round 1. Swell was 2-3'+, winds were onshore, and the ocean was a bit of a mess, but it was consistent enough to be contestable. Congrats to Ashley Weaver for winning the women's crown!

Fun morning for the team at the Huntington Pier, with solid chest to head high sets rolling through. In the end, Huntington just nipped us, 75 -72, on their home turf, but the Mustangs surfed brilliantly. The kids outpointed HB in 4 of the 7 heats, and Coco, Carly, Alex and Chad all had individual heat wins. I missed most of the first heat as it unfortunately started 13 minutes early, but there's good coverage of the rest. Many more photos here:

With the winter weather and swell wreaking havoc with the schedule, SBSSA wasn't able to run the annual All-Stars event on a Saturday this year, and it instead got underway before school on Wednesday with the Longboard portion of the contest. Quarters, Semis and the Finals were held for both women and men at 26th St. The south swell wasn't a direct hit, but enough got into the South Bay to make it very contestable, and the sun came out for the first time in what seemed like weeks to make for a beautiful and fun morning.
