EPM 🦠
EPM aka equine protozoal myeloencephalitis is caused by infection of the central nervous system with the protozoan parasites Sarcocystis neurona and, less commonly, Neospora hughesi. These parasites are typically found in food or water contaminated with opossum f***s. EPM is considered the most prevalent cause of neurologic disease of horses in the Americas. It is often a progressively debilitating disease and can affect any part of the nervous system, from the front of the cerebrum in the brain to the end of the spinal cord. In areas like ours, 50% of horses will test seropositive, which means they have antibodies due to exposure to the pathogens.
Signs to look out for:
🦠Gait abnormalities
🦠Incoordination
🦠Spasticity
🦠Muscle Atrophy
🦠Lethargy
🦠Behavioral Changes
🦠Facial Paralysis
If you notice these symptoms contact your Veterinarian!!
Once this is treated we may be able to help rehab your horse to get them feeling their best! Reach out to Triple 777 Ranch if we can help!

Recognizing Lameness🧐
Lameness is something every equine owner is familiar with. But spotting signs of lameness isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Catching lameness early can help prevent further injury to the horse and lead to quicker recovery.
Symptoms to watch for:
⭐️ Head Bob (represents forelimb lameness)
⭐️Pelvic Hike (hind limb lameness)- one hip rises higher than the other during ambulation
⭐️Altered Stride- length, foot placement, etc
⭐️Behavioral changes- if a horse has a sudden bad habit it’s worth looking in to!
Lameness can be caused by hoof problems such as abscesses, tendon and ligament injuries, arthritis of the joints, and muscle tightness.
Triple 777 Ranch has an abundance of knowledge and technology to help horses suffering from many different types of lameness. We strive to get horses back to feeling their best and we love the process. ❤️
