There's a hole on the Moon big enough to swallow a city block, and it doesn't stop at the bottom.

Japan's SELENE orbiter, better known as Kaguya, spotted the pit in the Marius Hills back in 2009. Roughly 50 metres across. Just a black circle in the grey.

Radar data later showed it opens into something far bigger. A lava tube, carved by molten rock billions of years ago, running for kilometres beneath the surface.

That matters more than it sounds. Up top, astronauts get cooked by radiation, hammered by micrometeorites and swung through 250 degrees of temperature swing. Down there, none of that.

The first Moon base might not be built at all.

It might just be moved into.
