WHY MAINTAINING MUSCLE MASS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN LOSING WEIGHT.
Especially as we get older.
Losing body fat can absolutely improve your health, confidence and quality of life.
But simply making the number on the scale smaller shouldn’t be the goal.
Because muscle matters.
Muscle is metabolically active tissue. The more lean mass you carry, the more energy your body requires to maintain it—even at rest.
But the benefits go far beyond metabolism.
Maintaining and building muscle helps you:
• Stay strong as you age
• Maintain your independence
• Support stronger bones
• Improve insulin sensitivity
• Maintain a healthier body composition
• Move better and perform everyday tasks more easily
• Protect your metabolism while losing body fat
This is also why aggressive dieting without resistance training can be such a mistake.
If you’re losing weight but also losing significant muscle along the way, you’re not necessarily improving your body composition the way you think you are.
The better goal?
Lose body fat while maintaining—or even building—muscle.
And yes, you can do both.
Lift weights.
Eat enough protein.
Use a reasonable calorie deficit.
Keep challenging your muscles.
Recover.
Be consistent.
Don’t just chase a lighter body.
Build a stronger one.
