Tonight was a bittersweet night at Kanzen Karate. Tonight marks my 42nd anniversary starting Kanzen Gojuryu, first day of high school.

But more importantly we remember the tragic day of 9/11 when terrorists took the lives of over 3,000 Americans. That day we had victims and heroes. When we say we remember, we mean it. We threw 911 punches after class to honor those lost that day.

End of summer classes are never full but equally important and always the best workouts.

We had a visitor , Mr. Keith Leshine, 42 year student, trains remotely from Georgia. Always great to see him.

Happy 74th birthday to our Sempai Jack Fajerman.

Along with helping students, he is an inspiration to others showing that age is just a number. You can train your body to do anything by overcoming initial soreness along with repetitive motion and a strong will to succeed.

As he enters his 75th year of life, it begs the question for all to answer: how is his hair?

Kanzen used to hold an annual “Shiai,” which was an inter Kanzen school tournament, held in Wagner College in Staten Island. Students competed in kata, kumite and ippons.

This was the first time I realized how good Kanzen karatekas really were. This picture I believe was taken in late 1986.

Yesterday was a great day for Kanzen Gojuryu. We had two excellent karatekas go up and achieve their full 1st degree Shodan black belts.

We also had 3 promotions: Robert Goldschlag to Sandan Sensei, Justin & Jared Sheinwald to Yodan Sensei. Lifelong commitments to Kanzen rewarded.

Congratulation to all on a wonderful night.

Kanzen is filled with 52 years of tradition, memories and great people we’ve all met along the way. We were treated tonight by Shihan Loeb and Renshi Abrahams.

I’ve said it before. All past students are welcome to come by for a visit, would love to see you all.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Zokucho Harry Rosenstein, founder of Kanzen Gojuryu Karate.

Born 82 years ago, Zoku Rosenstein built this school from the ground up in 1974 and dedicated his life to teaching strength, respect, and character.

He left us in 2020, but his influence is everywhere: in our students, in our traditions, and in the community he created.

We honor you today, Zoku.

Thank you for giving us a home, a purpose, and a legacy worth protecting.
