Disasters can strike at any moment, and it's crucial to be prepared.
Today, I want to emphasize the importance of making a plan for your family's safety. In the event of a disaster, your loved ones may not be together, so it's vital to know the types of disasters that could affect your area. Let's dive into the key steps to create an effective emergency plan.
Step 1: Put a plan together by discussing the following questions with your family, friends, or household members. Start your emergency plan by addressing these essential points:
- How will you receive emergency alerts and warnings? Stay informed by knowing the channels through which you'll receive crucial information.
- What is your shelter plan? Identify safe locations within your home or community where you can take refuge during a disaster.
- What is your evacuation route? Determine the safest route and destination in case you need to leave your home quickly.
- What is your family/household communication plan? Establish a reliable communication system to stay connected and reunite if separated.
- Do you need to update your emergency preparedness kit? Ensure your kit is stocked with essential supplies for each family member.
Step 2: Consider specific needs within your household. As you create your plan, tailor it to meet the unique requirements and responsibilities of your family. Discuss the following factors and how your support network can assist in times of crisis:
- Different ages of household members: Take into account the specific needs of children, elderly family members, or individuals with special needs.
- Responsibilities for assisting others: Identify who can provide support for childcare, caring for pets, or helping with medical equipment.
- Locations frequented: If certain family members spend a significant amount of time at specific places, include them in your plan.
- Dietary and medical needs: Ensure you have an ample supply of necessary medications, medical equipment, and consider dietary restrictions.
- Disabilities or access and functional needs: Plan for any mobility challenges or requirements for specific devices or equipment.
- Languages spoken: Take into account language barriers and ensure effective communication during emergencies.
- Cultural and religious considerations: Respect and incorporate any cultural or religious practices into your emergency plan.
- Pets or service animals: Make arrangements for the safety and well-being of your furry friends.
- Households with school-aged children: Coordinate with schools to ensure their safety during emergencies.
Step 3: Create a Family Emergency Plan using our user-friendly fillable form. This tool will guide you through the process and help you document all the necessary details.
Remember, preparedness is key. By taking the time to make a plan today, you can safeguard your family's well-being in the face of any disaster. Stay safe and be proactive in protecting what matters most.

Navigating Blizzard Conditions and Being Stranded on Shut Down Roads for Extended Periods❄️
Dear Fellow Patriots,
As winter blankets our surroundings with its icy grip, it is imperative that we equip ourselves with the knowledge and resilience to navigate the challenges that blizzard conditions can bring. Today, I write to you with guidance on how to cope with being stranded on shut down roads during a blizzard, emphasizing the importance of remaining calm, resourceful, and prepared.
1️⃣ Prioritize Safety: Above all else, prioritize your safety and the safety of those around you. Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained and equipped with emergency supplies such as a first aid kit, blankets, non-perishable food, water, and a flashlight. Keep your gas tank full and have a fully charged phone with a backup power source.
2️⃣ Stay Informed: Pay close attention to weather updates and road condition reports. If authorities advise against travel or issue warnings about dangerous conditions, heed their advice. It is better to be safe and prepared than to risk being stranded in hazardous circumstances.
3️⃣ Communicate and Plan Ahead: Inform someone you trust about your travel plans, including your intended destination and estimated arrival time. Share your route and check-in periodically to keep them updated. They can be a valuable resource in case of an emergency.
4️⃣ Stay with Your Vehicle: If you become stranded on a shutdown road, it is crucial to stay with your vehicle. It provides shelter and is easier for rescuers to locate. Clear snow away from the exhaust pipe to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and run the engine intermittently to stay warm while conserving fuel.
5️⃣ Conserve Resources: Use your resources wisely. Conserve fuel by running the engine for short periods to maintain warmth. Bundle up in layers and use blankets to conserve body heat. Ration food and water to ensure you have enough to sustain you until help arrives.
6️⃣ Signal for Help: If you need assistance, use your emergency supplies to signal for help. Hang a brightly colored cloth or use flares to attract attention. Use your flashlight to signal SOS in Morse code (three short, three long, three short) to alert potential rescuers.
7️⃣ Stay Calm and Positive: Being stranded can be a stressful and challenging situation. Stay calm, remain positive, and focus on finding solutions. Use the time to reflect, read, or engage in activities that keep your spirits high. Keeping a positive mindset will help you endure until help arrives.
8️⃣ Assist Others if Safe: If you are in a position to help others stranded nearby, lend a hand if it is safe to do so. Share resources, offer support, and come together as a community to weather the storm.
Remember, being stranded in a blizzard is a test of resilience, but with preparation, resourcefulness, and a calm mindset, you can navigate this challenging situation. Help will come, and together, we will emerge stronger.
Stay safe, stay warm, and may the spirit of perseverance guide us through this wintry journey.
Yours in solidarity,
WV
