Intensity and technique aren’t opposites.

One of the things we talk about in CrossFit is the relationship between mechanics, consistency, and intensity.

It’s easy to think that good technique means moving slowly and carefully, while intensity means going as hard as possible. But that’s not really it.

Good technique is what allows you to apply intensity safely and effectively.

As a workout gets harder, your breathing changes, fatigue sets in, and your movement might not look quite as perfect as it did on rep one. That’s normal.

The goal isn’t to eliminate those changes. The goal is to develop enough skill and awareness that you can push the intensity without losing the fundamental mechanics of the movement.

That’s one of the reasons we coach.

We’re not just counting reps. We’re helping you learn how to move well - and then gradually learn how to move well when things get hard.

That’s where fitness gets really interesting.

What’s in a name?

Apparently, quite a few people at CrossFit DelVal. 😂

Meet four of our members who all answer to Jackie (or Jacki).

We may need to start calling them by their last initials. Or just yell “JACKIE!” and see what happens.

There’s something really satisfying about doing something you weren’t sure you could do. Lifting a little more weight. Finishing a tough workout. Getting your first pull-up. Or simply showing up on a day when you didn’t really feel like it.

Exercise obviously has physical benefits, but taking care of yourself physically is also an important part of taking care of your mental health. There’s something about having a place to go, people to see, a challenge in front of you, and the satisfaction of accomplishing something difficult.

You walk in carrying whatever the day has handed you. You leave having done something for yourself.

Sometimes, getting stronger makes you happier. And that’s a pretty good reason to keep showing up!

Four years ago, Chris walked into CFDV overweight, out of shape, exhausted from a physically demanding job, and dealing with some pretty serious shoulder issues.

Today? He’s a strong, capable CrossFitter who can lift heavy, run, handle long grueling workouts, and do things he never thought he’d be able to do.

In this episode of Between Sets, we talk about his CrossFit journey, how his background in running helped shape the athlete he’s become, how strength training changed what he was capable of, and how the fitness he builds in the gym carries over into his work and life outside of it.

15+ years. That’s how long Gary has been training with us.

This is what we love about CrossFit. It’s not just about getting in shape for the next few months. It’s about building strength, fitness and confidence that you can carry with you for years - and hopefully decades.

Getting older doesn’t mean you stop being an athlete. It means you start thinking differently about what it means to be one.

Gary is still at it.

One of my favorite parts of owning a gym isn’t coaching. It’s getting to know the people who walk through our doors every day.

On the surface, we’re all here to work out. But if you spend a few minutes talking to people between sets, you find out they’re raising families, caring for patients, building careers, chasing hobbies, overcoming challenges, and trying to become a little better than they were yesterday.

This episode of Between Sets features Chrissy Thompson, who’s been a member at CrossFit Delaware Valley for 16 years. We talked about how CrossFit has made her a better skier, helped prepare her for the physical demands of being a nurse, and why she considers the gym her “third home.”

I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have.

Strong overhead starts long before the bar leaves the ground. Mobility, stability, patience, and countless reps all come together in one moment. Technique first. Strength follows.

Sweat today.
Stronger tomorrow.
Repeat.

🎥 Introducing Between Sets.

Every gym is full of interesting people with great stories, so we thought we’d start introducing you to them.

Between Sets is a new series where we grab one of our members during a strength workout and spend a few minutes getting to know them. We talk about fitness, family, work, hobbies, and whatever else comes up. There’s no script and no preparation, just real conversations with real people.

Our first guest is Chris, who’s been a member for six years. He shares what almost stopped him from trying CrossFit, how consistency changed his life, and why he keeps showing up.

We hope you enjoy Episode 1! And if you have a suggestion for who we should feature next, let us know in the comments.
